The alternator on our 93 Mustang is acting screwy. I can smell what smells like something electrical burnt around it, and the volt meter is rocking between 8-10 volts. Battery voltage is 13.5, checked at the battery. A knife blade is magnetic drawn to the rear of the alternator, so I am thinking that it is still charging, just putting out reduced voltage, if that is possible. I think it is a 2G, but not entirely sure. I know the wiring is different than an older Ford alternator, and it looks different than the one on my 99 pickup, which I figure is a 3G. Any suggestions on where and how to check the voltage coming out of it? I don't want to burn it up if it's still good, but if it's bad, I can get it rebuilt....

It is a 2G. Would probably be best to upgrade it to a 3G. The 2G's weren't that great, they were known to randomly catch fire..

OMG! Sure don't want that to happen! It already smells burnt, but seems like it's working partially. I may have to change it over. Are the plugs the same for the 3G?
