need factory torque for Lug nuts

I am looking for some documentation regarding the factory setting for tightening the lug nuts on a '72 comet stock wheel. I am trying to get my tires installed at Coscto Wholesale for this car. If I want them installed there, I must provide a copy of a specification sheet showing this information. It has to reference to a shop manual or similar. They hand tighten all their tires to factory specs and they only have information on their computer back to 1989. I have a couple of different repair manuals for the car, but they mention nothing about how many lbs. torque each nut should have when being installed.

Sounds like a bunch of dumbasses to me. Tell them to use specs for an 89 Mustang. I'm not so sure I'd even let them work on my car.

 

I buy all my tires at Costco, there cheap and I get 2% back at the end of the year. The factory service manual should have the info you need, I'll look tonight when I get home from work.

There may be other places but I found it on pages 224, 226, 227 of the Chilton's "Maverick Comet 1970-77" Repair & Tune-Up Guide. 70-115 ft. lbs.

Pep Boys has some weird rules for buying tires also.
to get my...275x15s i had to tell them "what car they fit", that's how they wrote it up...

......

 

i used to work at super shops and they had a similar policy of hand torqueing the lugnuts. they were not as strict as costco. the did have a chart of torque specs for cars and if the car was not on the chart they had a chart for the stud size's recomended toruque. im pretty sure for 1/2" studs its 80 ftlbs.

The chilton maverick repair guide I have is a hard cover with about 125 pages and doesn't include the specs I need. Do any of you that have the repair guide Gene mentioned and have access to a scanner? Or Dave if you find the info in one of your manuals. I need to present a copy of the page the information is on and probably the book cover.

And I guess I better get me one of those maverick/comet repair guides, looks to be more thorough. Though I can't wait much longer to replace the tires. Front driver side tire has separated.

I bet it's in the hard cover book also, you just have to find it in the text. Look in the brakes section towards the end of a procedure where the wheels would be getting put back on.

Sam's Club torqued mine to 100 and twisted two lug nuts off. I would ask them to go on the low side of that range. Just my 2 cents.

 

I assume you carried the wheels in. I have run into similar problems before and just told them it's for a trailer.

 

I torqued thousands of wheels and I would do 80 my self. Ask them if there torque wrenches are calibrated and if not TELL them they need to before they do yours, or use a new one.
