Vehicle - 99 Ford Taurus (again) Okay, this car is becoming a pain. Brakes won't stop the car on a dime, and the pressure will eventually leak out and cause the pedal to go to the floor. Sounded like the master cylinder to me, but that didn't help. Front pads and rotors are a few years old, with teh calipers being maybe 5 years old. Not sure if the drums have ever been touched. Hope to get a jump on this in the morning before it gets hot, where should I start?
Also check the caliper slide pins for seizing. (rear also if 4 wheel disc) they must move free.If rear drum check the wheel cylinders for leakage and the adjustment on the shoes.pull the caliper boots back and look for wetness replace as needed, if all this checks out looks like you may have a bad master cylinder again.
Are you losing fluid? If so, it HAS to be going somewhere. Check for leaks (everywhere). Pedal to the floor is alot of fluid. If you aren't losing fluid, the master cylinder is bleeding back internally.
Ditto on the MC if all else checks out. When you change it out be certain you bench bleed the MC BEFORE you install it on the car.Bleeding em on the car can damage the pistons since the pedal will push the pistons too far in the bore with no fluid behind em on the first stroke.Piston will go past the hole in the MC for the compensating port and put a nick in the piston. Its all down hill from there...Good luck!!!
