Need some help...I replaced the fuel filter and it didnt help it.

The engine will lose all power at random times, whether its in park, idling, driving 30mph or 60mph...theres no advance warning of it happening like spitting or sputtering....it just dies(all electrical stays on)...sometimes if Im travelling the motor will kickstart itself back up...but if its parked or idling and it stops, if I try to start it again itll just turn over again and again...it will not start again until I turn the key OFF and then start it...after it runs again it might shut down again in 30 seconds...or may not shut down again for the rest of the trip.

    Any ideas?

Is the car stick or automatic? If its automatic, is it an Overdrive auto?

automatic, no overdrive, I did think the gears were binding at one point until the car shut off with it idling in park.

Darren would be your best bet for help.
I have a Dodge van, it did that, it was the camshaft position sensor.

From what I searched online the Sundance doesnt have a camshaft position sensor.

Thanks for the tip though, I own a 2006 Dodge Caravan, if it ever does that I know exactly where to look now :thumbs2:

Plugs were replaced 4 years ago(about 2,000 miles ago), the car hasnt been driven 3,000 miles in the past 7 years...I bought new plugs but the ones thats in it still looks brand new(didnt know until I had already bought new ones)

I did also notice that when the engine is revved it stays high for a few seconds then very slowly go back down to idling, its not an immediate response...Im not sure if that could play a part but its something odd Ive noticed.

Should have kept my '78 Silverado :(

I'm not familiar with Sundances, can you give some general info?

    Carb'ed or Injected?
    Distributor or distributor-less ignition system?
    Any recent work done?
    What have you checked?
    What have you replaced?

When you cannot restart, does it have spark? Does it have fuel pressure?

With intermittent problems, you may need to install some diag equipment to pinpoint the failure while driving. For instance, tape a fuel pressure gauge to the windshield to monitor fuel pressure. Jumper into a fuel injector or use a noid light to monitor injector pulse. Jumper into the 12V side of ignition to monitor primary ignition... etc.

Someone else might know more about this specific model, maybe there is a common problem or diag procedure for stalling.

When I ask about the plugs, I mean the color. It might be running lean if you have a fuel pressure problem.

But, to clarify what you just said... You rev it, let go of the pedal, and it takes a moment for it to go back down to idle? That's weird. Throttle position sensor perhaps?

1988 Plymouth Sundance 2.2 4 cylinder non-turbo, fuel injected, distributor

fuel filter, cap & rotor replaced

Thats what I was thinking...or the throttle cable sticking....when Im driving its an immediate response but when its idling it slowly goes back down

The plugs(if I remember) was a little dark but still had complete contacts, none broken or anything(I only checked the 2 front ones though)

The car idles great but it drives really horrible...like theres something holding it back...I know they were economy cars but Ive had 1.8's, 2.0's and 2.5's that responded a LOT better then this thing...starting off is slow, slight uphill gains no speed at all.

Another little fact is when I bought the car it went from driving at sea level to driving at 1,000 ft above sea level....dont know if that changes anything
