Well im trading a 70 maverick for a rusty 51 chevy. He is in AL and all he has is a bill of sale what do i need to do to get a title
From the pictures i have seen looks like it, but i just want it because i know i can get more out of it then the maverick.
alabama didn't have titles until 1975. like craig said the tennessee dmv would be the ones to talk to for accurate info
In TN, this is going to be fun. My Maverick came from Alabama, and thus I didn't have a title. I had to have a bill of sale, notarized of course, and also a copy of the previous owner's last registration. That part might be complicated, but try to get a copy of it even if it hasn't been registered in a decade, get something from the state, or else it gets very complicated after that. A stack of forms, a police inspection, a godawful mess. That experience almost made me want to "move back to Mississippi" where I could just get a title bond and be done with it.
If you can get it titled in any other state before you take it to TN, do it, because it's completely insane trying to title a car for the first time here. Transferring a title - no big deal, that's easy. If I ever do that again I'm going to "sell it" to my brother in MS and then "buy it back."
...but actually I'm not even sure you can do that. I think if you register it in AL it will remain without a title. At least you'll have registration to bring to those nazis in TN though.
Alabama will NOT title any vehicle made before 1975. Not even if it had a title in another state. I bought a car from TN once that was a 72 IIRC, when I handed them them the TN title, they gave it back and said keep it for your records or throw it away, we don't title anything older than a 1975 model. That may have changed, but I'm not aware of it if it did.
Strange they won't give you a new title. GA dosen't require titles on cars '85 and older, but they will issue you one in your name if the car came with a valid title when you bought it.
