I am swaping out my 6 cyl for a 302V8 in my 71 Maverick. I have a column shift for the transmission, but the linkage that hooks to the transmission that was in the car does not fit witht he 302 installed. Is there a different linkage for the 302 to the C4 transmission? Would I be better off converting to a floor shifter? Any help or direction would be great. Thanks
There is a difference between the 6 and 8 cylinder linkages. If you go with a floor shifter then you will have to either use a cable shifter or change to the floor shifter linkage on the transmission.
Shifter Linkage Thanks for the reply. In all the reading I did on doing the 302 swap, I never saw any mention of a differnt linkage. My first preference would be to leave the car a column shift. If I can find an original 302 in the junk yard with a column shift and can get the linkage, do you know if I will be able to get it in place with the headers? If I convert to a floor shift any recomendations? any and all advice welcome.
Most headers will not fit with the factory column shift linkage. You can fit a cable to the column shifter that can be routed around the headers or use a floor shifter with either rod or cable but you will have to either modify your transmission's shift lever or get the one for the floor shifter and install it.
Column Shift Cable Thanks Again. I think I want to go the "cable from the column shifter route. Can you point me in the right direction on the kind of cable and where to get it. I know the C4 Transmission that I put in the Maverick had a cable attached to it, I just dont know if the cable was part of a column or floor shift. I do know it came out of a late 60s Mustang. Your insight has really been great, thanks! I know the
bud i ran into the same problem thinkin it would work i got my 302 with long tubes installed little to find out i had to convert to floor shifter but it looks good it was alot easier only thing i had to do was take my throttle body out and flip the shifter linkage around email me and i will explain more into detail ska8trguy04@yahoo.com
If you really want to keep the column shift there is a way. I had a friend cut the rear tube on the left side header and tip it towards the engine about one inch and then reweld it. My column shift works like a charm, but like somebody said you have to have the 302 linkage. Now I am working with a 351 stroker motor, but I believe the 302 type headers can be modified the same way. Lee "THE MAV" Richart
for my comet i am going to design and build linkage cable brackets so i can use a cable instead of the z bar configuration. with a cable i can tuck it up by the frame and should work well. i will take pics of what i do and post them
Manual transmission? if so there's a lot of guys running those. If you do a search you'll find all the info
Do you have no class?? Buy the latest issue of Modified Mustangs, it has a killer article on a B&M floor shifter, might make me change my mind on what I was doing.
According to 99.9% of the US population i don't the first column shift car i ever owned was a 1973 Plymouth fury III, it was also the first car i ever sold! i do like the idea of a manual column shifter though
