How far would you go to save a Shelby?

That is one extensive restoration. When all is said and done...what is original.....the roof? VERY nice work. I appreciate a quality restoration like that.

I have seen some Mavericks that needed that much work, and owner's who thought that it was worth the effort. I would have to say.....NO maverick is worth that much restoration work, even a Shelby Maverick. :hide:

Yeah? Well, you just wait and see what kind of restoration I do when I finally find one of those made in California Shelby Mavericks.

Is it just me then? Maybe because I am in New England? I have seen worse cars with less pedigree get restored or hot rodded.

Well it is good that the car got saved....but the value of a car as collectable as this is definately affected. No matter how nice it turns out it will never be worth as much as a car that still has all of the original sheet metal and Shelby fiberglass intact.

My car was build out of a wrecked Shelby in the early 70s. My dad bought it in 1975 and it's been sitting ever since with less than 36000 miles but it needs restoration. It is a J code fastback with all original Shelby parts...but it's not the real deal. A few Shelby guys have told me that I should offer my stuff up for sell since it is all original so it could be used on a genuine Shelby that needs it. SO I figured that might be the right thing to do...I could sell the parts and buy reproduction stuff with part of the money and use the rest for part of the restoration. I layed down a price for it all and all they did was low ball me. So screw it, I'm keeping it all and restoring the car as it was...though not a real Shelby. I'd never claim it to be a real Shelby but I'm sure it will be closest thing to one I'll ever have.

I was going to say the same thing, up here, I've seen worse cars restored. After all, that KR is one of those "Holy Grail" cars, well worth saving. Plus now days, with the Dynacorn shells, it's even easier.

My Comet was just as bad in some spots (not the quarters and frame rails) but I'm still committed to driving it one day and I have made pretty good progress for a non-pro. It's a bigger challenge when you can't buy new metal and don't have the top end tools (but cheaper). Still, I love doing it and I do it knowing I'll never get enough $ to cover the time, money and sweat I put into it.

I saw a Shelby in worse shape than that one get towed to the Shelby shop for resto. The car looked like it sat in a field for years. Just a shell sort of. Not much left salvageable but the roof and VIN. They had to reinforce the car just to get it on the flat bed to transport it. It was my best friends neighbors project. The car did get finished. 68 428 car also.

Never say never. I know of a guy here in town that bought a GT500 conv. for $1500 that was actually driveable. It was about 10 years ago though and the bad thing is...he had to pick it up on a Uhaul trailer from Arizona. He came back to town and brought his mom back with him. She was staying at a motel and they got car jacked and the Explorer with the Shelby on the trailer ran through the motel. I still have the newspaper clipping somewhere showing the Shelby and trailer hanging out of the motel.

It didn't tear the car up too bad and I actually got a chance to drive it later on...the only real Shelby I've ever driven.

Doesn't look much worse than some of the Mavericks I've seen restored around here. Only difference is they have new sheetmetal to replace the rust with, and we have to hunt good original metal.

If a Maverick was that rusty, it wouldn't be worth fixing....

I gotta agree with that. In this day and time you can always find a usable Maverick body. No way I would go through the trouble of fixing extensive rust....I'd just hunt down a better body. The only exception to me might be a car like a Sprint or a V8 Grabber....as long as it wasn't real bad.
