I was talking with another member who had a 460 mustang and it impressed me. At a later date I would like to build a 460 powered coupe. I would like to run high 6's na and maybe low 6's on nitrous. I was thinking a 460 with flattops and d0ve heads, not sure on the cam, should go high 6's in a gutted fox body pretty easy. I have read where several people have done this but then I read where a similar combo runs 7.90's so it throws me off. lol. I was talking to a guy at the track who had an 83 coupe with a late 70's 460 stock other than cam performer 460 intake and 850 holley. It even had stock manifolds on it. stock converter and 4.10 gears. He ran an 8.12 at 87 and it was missing a little. He said it ran a best of 7.80's. Anyway what it a good budget combo for high 6's na with a 460
My Mustang has a dished piston 460, C8VE (basically doves) small .520 hyd cam, is about 3400#'s with me in it and has gone 7.20's 1/8. The other motor with a smaller cam, less compression, stock shrt block, went 7.60's, 6.80 on 175 juice. 750 carb, 4.11 gears For some good advice go to http://www.460ford.com/forum/ and for some builds.... http://www.reincarnation-automotive.com/Knownenginecombinationswithdynoorrackprovenperformance.html
On that forum they have a nice budget build that makes about 500 ft lbs! They showed it in PHR a while back.
cool I figure if it went 7.20's in a 3400lb car it should go high 6's in a gutted fox body. Have you ever sprayed the engine that went 7.20's
Never sprayed the new motor, I put a glide in it at the same time and I'm afraid to hit it with the extra launch HP. The convertor is too loose, it goes to 4,800, and I shift at 5,500. I lose a lot of torque. I think it might go low 6.60's juiced. One thing to think about is you won't need above 4.11's, 3.89 would be good. Use the torque to go fast.
can anyone give me a crash course on 429-460 heads, which ones make good power and which ones are smoggers
you want C8VE, C9VE, or DOVE heads. I think the '71s are ok too. Stay away from the D2VEs, they are a one year only head and they suck. Really detonation prone. The D3VEs are low compression, but run ok with some work. Supposedly putting an early set of heads on a later block gets you about 10:1, about right for 93 gas. I'm not mentioning the old CJ heads 'cause I figure you're on a budget, a word usually not mentioned when referring the anything CJ.
D2's are junk as stated, don't count out the D3's, that's what my old 7.60 combo used. If you build a stroker, which is pretty cheap too, they help make compression manageable.

With a C4 and a 4.11 geared 9" on 28x10 slicks it went 10.80's all day long.
Well I have a 460 which is a stock short block,C9 heads with 2.20/1.76 valves screw in studs comp roller tip rockers minor home porting ,a Lunati bracket master .545/.554 cam and stealth intake . It has MSD ignition and hooker super comps in a 1992 Mustang GT which weighs 3000 # a c4 3200 stall and 3.55 gears and runs 10.65 in the quater with no juice and 275/50/15 drag radials on pump gas .. . Id consider selling the complete drivetrain for the right money . Or just the motor , converter ,and JW Bellhousing .. The tranny is a nicely built C4 that I just freshened ..
