did a mercury zephyr ever come with a limited slip diff? i know a kid who has one he wants to trade for a 5 speed transmission i have. he said the car has a limited slip. what are the chances? (the car is in a different town so i cant go check. i just thought it was unlikely the car would have it but i thought i would check. it also has a 6 in it. am i to assume it is a 250 (if it is original) with a c4? will the bell housing fit our cars? is there any other parts i should grab?
It will be a weak 7.5 inch rearend if it is "Factory" , Also it will not bolt into your Maverick without several Modifications. I do not believe that any limited slip 7.5 were produced.
What year is it? Limited slip was optional on Mustang 7.5s in the early 80s and the Zephyr is on the same platform and had most of the same engine options as the Stang. I believe traction lok was standard on the V8 Stangs in 85 and they all had 7.5s. I know my stock 5.0 GT was powerful enough to break it with the timing advanced 4 degrees So I believe it (Big stretch) could have a posi and be a six but why would any one order it that way?
My wifes Zephyr (Fairmont Grill and tail lights) has an 8.8 from a mustang with limited slip and factory 3.27 gears! Also it has been converted to 5 lug (all Zephyrs and fairmonts are 4 lug)
mav do you have any idea what that cars weight is that would make a great drag car if i could find one.

They are OFTEN used for drag cars due to the fact that they are in fact Fox chassis (same as 79-93 Mustangs) I havent weighed my wifes car ,but they usually weigh around 2900-3100 lbs, and can be made much lighter when using them for a drag car.
I was originally looking for a 64-65 Falcon to put my Cleveland in. When I couldn't find a decent one, the Zephyr/Fairmont was my second choice and I had one on the line for a couple of hundred bucks. That was when the Maverick fell into my lap - even back in 89, I hadn't seen a Maverick in years. Glad I got it though.
so basically all the suspension and and motor stuff from those years of mustangs will work on the zephyr and fairmont? i like different and that zephyr is just that.and i could do a purple one.
Fairmont/Zephyrs are an obsession of mine. I've had four Futura models in the last fifteen years. Typical weight with a pushrod small block in street trim is 3000-3100 lbs. or so. Lightest one I've had was 2740 with me in it. Included a 393" Cleveland engine, clutchless Jerico, and a cut-down 9" rear end. On a 27x9 slick it went 9.40's at 140 mph. We just picked up a 1978 Fairmont Futura as a project for myself and my 13 year old son. Looks like it will get the N/A 4.6 3V engine out of my '07 Mustang when I replace it with my new 305" big bore 3V engine this winter. We're going to use a 4R70W transmission and an 8.8 rear end. Going with a basecoat/clearcoat paint scheme with a black basecoat and a dark saphire mixed into the clearcoat. Also going to take all the window moldings and have a carbon fiber finish done on them via hydrographics system. With a black and gray interior it should be a nice car for the kiddo. Ought to run like a scalded ape too. :evilsmile I love the look of the Magnum 500 wheels on the white Zephyr shown above. I'll have to consider those.
84-86 SVO mustang, and GT cars till they went with the 8.8 in mid 86.I do belive it could be ordered in one of ford "packages" also but would be extremly uncommon and WEAK I split a 7.5 carrier one time and the axle flew out
