I also say; go as big as u have the space for and can afford. I have 20*22 two car garage. I shud say 10*22 cuz my wife Buick Lucerene takes up half. It goes w/o saying that her car will be garaged most of the time. I can leave it outside occassionally for a few days to make some repairs if I need the extra room. Hope I never have to pull the engine. LoL. That leaves me no room to store anything in the nature of body parts. Fortunately the car I have does not seem to need panel replacements. Living in a large metro area we don't have the space that folks in some surburban areas, and nothing anywhere near, folks in rural areas may have. However, I do the best I can w/ what I have. I was not in the car hobby for many years so did'nt need a lot of work space. I decided to return last year so enjoying what I have.
Im not weird about the hole storage thing my grand parents have a barn on there property thats where the parts will be so this will be a shop only for working on it and storing it during the winter.
That's what I thought...then it became a fabrication shop, a sheetmetal shop, a body shop, transmision shop, engine shop, old automobilia display, lounge, and personal bar. I lack the aformentioned self restraint
. build it as big as you can afford , in this case ..bigger is better !!! son and i are building a 40x50 . already have decided it wont be big enough, but will have to do because of funds.
I work in a 16' x 25' carport, open to the weather on two sides. Have my tool boxes and air compressor and welder on the house side, a table on the utility room end. It's small, but I make do. Hope to be able to extend it out 20' to the side, and go the full 30' length of the house some day, and fully enclose it. Then I will be able to shelter three vehicles instead of one like I can now, as well as have room to add a drill press and maybe a hydraulic press. Small parts are stored either in the carport or utility room, large parts such as sheet metal and rear ends are outside. Also use one of the parts cars for small storage. Like others said, build as big as you can afford, because it probably won't be cheaper in the future.
I have a 16X70 carport and 16X33 feet of it is a enclosed garage... It's small but works for me.... As stated build as big as your budget will alow.... The advantage of my small shop is it keeps me on track to build only one car, so I'm not jumping around on other projects...lol
I agree with the others, go as big as money and time allows. Our building is 20x14 and the entire upstairs is filled with mav parts and dads concrete mixer and my spare engine makes moving around difficult I had to rebuild my C4 in the basement and that was a mess. I would kill to have some of your guys shops haha, but I at least my car and I are out of the weather.
I was restoring an old John Deere 212 before I parked and disassembled my mav. That was a fun little project and is a heck of a little tractor.
My unattached garage is 28 x 32 and was built by my wife's cousin, who owns a framing business, and was built back in 2006. He had just built this very same garage the summer before but that one had the overhead doors on the short side because the home owner needed the depth for his Dodge truck hooked up to his bass boat. I took those same plans and changed the doors over to the long side plus added the man door and small window. We talked about the first garage not having much head room because of the shallow roof pitch so we changed the roof to a 12/12 pitch and added the dormers and second floor windows. The Maverick is housed behind the right side door and the rest of the garage is pure clutter The photos are fresh today showing last night's snow
Nice garage!! When we bought our current house it was being built and I had the builder add a 15X30 "hobby" garage on beside the attached garage. I wish now I had opted for a larger detached one, something like what you have, behind the house.
The best part is it is only listed on my tax bills as a 28 x 32 "out building". It would have made a much bigger difference to my tax total if it was attached and part of the house foot print
Without seeing pictures inside the garage confirming that there is infact a Maverick inside then it will be assumed that this is actually a storage shed for seasonal items and boxes of wife stuff she didnt have room for in the house.
