I remember as a kid that in 1970 we had the option of buying a hatch or one with a trunk (we bought the lime green hatch of course). I don't think that the ones without the hatch were very popular, but I do remember them in 1970 anyway.

They came with a trunk, or hatchback, and a wagon.

The trunk was very small in a very small car. That's why my parents didn't get that version. The hatchback was much more practical.

At one time, both my brother and I owned early 70's Pintos with the trunk. Both had identical engines, but his was an Auto and mine was a 4 Speed. Mine would walk his all day long and just felt like it had more power.

His is long gone as it was made into a 4 cylinder stock car for a local short track, but I still see my old one once in a while running down the road.

I had one of the standard 1972 wagons in 1981 with the woodgrained sides. It was a kick! Danged thing burned more oil than gas and left a smoke screen every time you started it, but it never left me stranded. We spent many days out in the desert with that car trying to do 'Rockford' turns by using the parking brake. Funny part was that Lazer nitrous systems were all the rage back then and we put a Lazer sticker on the back window! We were such clowns!

I'm sure Jeff knows all this, but for other members' sake:
Go stick your head under that thing and see if it has an 8" rear.
If so, it'll have a good gear ratio. They only came with 3.40 or 3.55s in Pintos. That one looks too old, but in some of the later Pinto/Bobcats, they even had a limited slip option.
Pinto + 8" rear = Desireable gear ratio worth using or reselling!

Never pass a Pinto, Bobcat, Granada, or Monarch in a boneyard without looking underneath!
The Pintos can have valuable 8" gears, the Granadas can have 9" rears that are bolt ins for Mustangs/Mavericks!

My 74 Pinto is a trunk model. I converted it to small bumpers, and is currently getting the 2.3 Turbo 5 speed swap, has 17 inch wheels, Cobra 13" brakes up front, and a 8.8 rear with disc outta the same 1998 Cobra. They are still around you just have to look. My dad lives in Gadsden Alabama, he just sold his 71 Trunk model when I was up there back in Sept. I wish I had the extra money I would have bought it. Was super straight with no rust. Sold it for around $300.:(

I've kept my eyes open around here for a while and the cheapest I've seen them is $1500. They hold their value out here, but they don't drive them much.

My first car was a '71 Pinto bought back in 1980! Light blue trunk model...have owned over 50 of them over the years(sold my last one about 8 years ago). Everyone told me that they were the worst cars that Ford ever made...I thought to myself that if this is the worst one then Ford must make awesome cars....I have bought Fords ever since and have never been disappointed!:)
