I was thinking of getting wider rears once spring gets here. I'm running 15's and have 195's on front and 215's on the back. I was thinking of keeping the fronts the same and put 235's on back. I'm probably splitting hairs here, but will the wider tires make it harder to do a burnout? Will I notice any difference in handling with the 235's? Any thoughts on tire size and combinations in general? I don't want to go much over 235's for fear of rubbing.
235 s will do 2 things assuming the aspect ratio remains the same: more contact area, and larger tire diameter, which will in alter your final drive. Increase speed in relation to the spedo. And decrease the leverage your rear axle has to break the tire loose. ( long way to say "yes, burnouts will be harder." Now just build a bigger motor
You're not going to see much difference in going to a 235 tire. Go up to 245/265 and go lower on the aspect ratio to keep the diameter closer to the same. Your 215's are probably 70 series I'm betting. Go to a 245/60 or a 265/50. Either of these will fit without mods or rubbing. I've got 205/50's on mine with only a change in backspace (15 x 10 with a 5" backspace) stiffer springs and rolled fender lips.
im runing 255 60r 15 on a 15x8 rim with 4 and a quater back spacing and they dont rub at all and thats with all original rear suspension and i have no problem geting them to spin. they also handel the corners well and still no rubing. i blew my diff up and am in the proces of installing 3.80 gears and a mini spool so that should be good times!
I can't get my tires to break loose as it is and I shouldn't be having any problems with a 347...but I think that is more of an issue I need to figure out with my carb.
If you have a 347 and your car wont break the tires loose at all, Then yes ... the car has some serious issues.
Or some serious traction! Don't feel bad, my 302 won't spin on dry pavement, either. I always thought that was a good thing.........
my 302 will rip the tires enough that she won't roll while doing it... dunno why your 347 won't... def. something up with that.
stock 4.6 4v cobra with 275/40/17's and doesnt have a bit of trouble smoking them, even with stock 3.27 gears (and like everyone knows, the 4.6 engines dont have half the torque of a 302 based engine) so any good 302 should absolutely bake the tires.... as usual
The 9.2:1 compression 308 in my car will spin the 275/60 15 street tires from a thirty mile per hour roll hard enough to put a nice set of tire marks up the road. SO I would think that ANY 347 should really light `em up hard from a stand still.
I have a slight hesitation or bog right off the start....when I pull the car out this spring I'm going to have the holley carb tuned and hopefully that will take care of it.
about any v8 in a maverick should roast them. I had a stock 86 302 with an intake and headers and it would roast street tires all through first gear. I had some old 26x11.50 et streets and it would bog terribly
