Will a Borg Warner T-5 from a 4.6 Mustang work behind a 302 with a change of bellhousing, or is the input shaft different?

A friend of mine got a deal on a wrecked Mustang and offered to give me the T-5.....can't beat that price, thought I might try to stuff it in my 69.5 Grabber clone

The T5 wasn't mounted behind a 4.6l that I know of. That would be a T45 or a Tremec 3650, both of which are designed with integral bell housings. I don't think it will work without a lot of work.

Doesn't sound very promissing. This is copied from a Mustangs forum ....... :16suspect

Borg Warner T-45 transmissions were only used behind 4.6L single and dual over head Mustangs from 1996 to 1999. Tremec, in 2000, replaced the T-45 with the 3650 which is very similar in design. The T-45's design is very much like the T-56 six speed transmissions. In fact the T-45 and T-56 share many of the same parts. It has single rail gear selector and carbon lined steel synchro rings making it a smooth shifting transmission at high rpm's. The gears are larger and stronger then a T-5 and about the same as a Tremec 3550 in size. The T-45 is the first transmission in the B/W -Tremec lineup with a built-in bell housing so it can not be exchanged. This limits the T-45 to 4.6L mod motors as the bolt pattern is different than a Windsor push rod motors.

T-45 from 1996-98 GT are different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount point is moved further back for the Cobras and as well as a 8 tooth drive speedometer gear. Cobras T-45 are equipped with a 7 tooth speedo gear. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. Why this was not done earlier is not understood.

That looks pretty similar to my T5. Came from behind a 3.8 V6. Its internally the same as the ones behind 8s and the bellhousing bolts right up, only issue is the starter and its quickly fixed.

Therein lay my confusion, he initially told me it was out of a 97 GT, which would have had the 4.6.....turns out it was a V-6 model.

So, it's relegated to the back of his garage til I can find the time (and gas money) to make the trip to get it

the 3.8l T5 is the same dimensionally, but I think you have the longer input shaft and different bell housing. bell housing isn't a problem if you use the earlier one (85-93) but you'll have to change the input shaft too and I had issues with the headers on the later one (94-95 V8, 94-04 V6) and the input shaft is longer on the later one meaning you have to match the bell housing to the input shaft or change it like I did to run the earlier bell housing. shorty headers may not have the same issues I did with the long tube 6901's

'94-'95 V8 T5's and '94-'04 V6 T5's had the deeper bell housing and longer input shaft.
