i dont know everything so i do believe i need some help. i have a 1990 mazda mx6. little sideways engine. problem is i have a broken stud for my exhaust manifold. i cant get a drill or drill bit in with out pulling the motor. before i up and tap the motor and bore out the manifold some is there any tricks to try. mind that i have maybe a thread and a half.
Assuming you already soaked it down with PB blaster, or another type of penetrate oil? It depends on why it broke. If it broke because the stud threads are seized into the threaded hole, (cross threaded, corroded, etc) then you are most likely going to have to drill and tap. If it broke because the stud nut was over tightened, then there is a chance the stud threads are OK. You could try and cut a slot in the top of the exposed stud (with a dremel) and use a regular stubby screwdriver to remove it. You could try and heat up the surrounding area (not the stud directly) with a torch and see if that helps. Don't go crazy if its aluminium, but cast iron is forgiving. Or, another option, live with it broken? I have a snapped exhaust stud on my truck, been there since I got it.
I assume you mean into the head. Try to fit an air powered right angle drill with a short left handed bit. I have one for this and its very compact. Not a lot of power but you dont need it. Maybe you can borrow one?? The reverse cut drill bit will often bite into the bolt and thread it out for you. PS Dont forget you have to run the drill in reverse for the bit too work. Just ask my apprentice.

Wow, mine has that problem too, but he just won't admit it, it's hard..since he knows more than me...
yes i ment head and just wow on the apprentice. it looks like it was in there long enough it just came apart. i may go with your live with it idea depending on how many of the others break when i actually try to get them out. yay for foreign pieces of scrap metal.
My broken bolt removal trick: heat the bolt with a torch, red hot, touch a candle to it, back it out. As long as you have something to get vicegrips on, they usualy come out.
If it has any amount above the head surface then you can have a nut welded to the stud and remove it with a socket and ratchet.
LOL. Funny cause mine knows more than me also.... Mine will actually try to push his way between me and the job to HELP me... Then it ends up broken and it takes me twice as long to fix it. He means well I guess. KIDS!!!
That's why I have a shirt that says ' If things get any worse, I'm going to have to ask you to stop helping' Sorry about your bolt issue. Seen a CJ7 with a large C clamp around the head to hold the back of the exhaust manifold down. Worked decently. Barring that drilling with the reverse drill is probably the best answer. Good thing is that jap exhaust bolts/studs are made out of really soft metal.
