Dropped the drive shaft off at American Drive Shaft Service in Marietta, GA last Thursday and picked it up this past Tuesday. Took 4 1/4 inches off the front shaft, C4 yoke I snatched off one of my Maverick parts cars installed with a swap joint, all new U joints, new carrier bearing, and the whole thing balanced. Great work, good price and fast turnaround time, and the shop is owned by fellow Mavericker Lisa Richard's (Black SunShine) father. Can't beat that. No turning back now!!
I wanna see this Frankenstine completed! Should pi$$ off a few Chebbie folks when they learn that that Chebbie is built like a rock with Ford Tough!
I know the feeling on the weather. I got the blown up 460 outta the motorhome, the rebuilt one is sitting beside it. Started changing out what needed changing between the two, still got the oil pan and valve covers to go, but it's raining now and supposed to rain all day tomorrow. Might get a little break and get a few things done.
Been in NC most of the week with my girlfriend Katie and we got quite a bit done on the truck. Pulled the engine/trans out for the last time to install the flex plate and put the torque converter in. The engine previously had a T5 behind it and I had a bit of trouble getting the pilot bearing out, no one in town had a puller. Ended up just welding a bolt to it and using a big pair of vice grips to work it out. Got everything installed and torqued down and tossed the engine and trans back together for the final time, then bent up some new trans cooler lines and tossed the engine and trans back into the truck, installed the shortened drive shaft which fits perfect, and got the mounts worked out. New trans cooler lines. Just some pre-flared brake line I bent by hand. The 5.0 sitting on the mounts in it's final spot. Pretty awesome deal with the motor mounts. That's the original stock 350 frame mounts, I just drilled new holes and moved them back 2 inches. For the motor mounts, I just went to Advance Auto and ordered them for a '77 F150 with a 302. Near perfect fit. Unbelievable. For the trans mount, I just need to slide the trans crossmember back an inch and drill 2 holes for a Maverick trans mount to bolt down. Also did a lot of other little time consuming nit picking things like cutting the old rusted out exhaust off and what not. Only parts I'm lacking on getting it going right now is a power steering pump bracket, water pump pulley and belt tensioner. Truck should be back on the road by this time next week.
Looking good! Jamie, I know it's too late now, but the easiest way to get a pilot bearing or bushing out is simply pack the hole full of grease, and take a round, solid object that fits close to the hole diameter, put it in the hole and whack it with a BFH. Might have to repack it with grease a time or two before it will push all the way out. I used a deep well socket on an extension to get the one out of the 460, but a punch or solid piece of steel rod will work....
No new pics, but I spent the last few days figuring out the radiator hoses, wiring, belts/pulleys, etc. and pleased to say I drove the truck a couple of miles up and down the road last night. Just the final details to tend to now, like exhaust, tuning the carb some and hooking the power steering up and some gauges. Thing gets up and goes pretty good!
Well the truck is together and I've driven it a bit, but have a problem. Damn thing has a constant misfire on cylinder #8. Have tried everything, new plugs, wires, distributor, checked for bent push rods, checked compression, everything is exactly as it should be but it just won't hit on that cylinder for some reason. I'm at a loss right now. This engine was in a '92 Mustang when I bought it, and I rode in that car and it ran GREAT. So it just doesn't make any sense to me right now. Here's a couple of pics from Friday night when I drove it a few miles up the road to the gas station, misfiring the whole way. Just really sucks because I'm about to move and need the truck bad, plus after all this work I just want to DRIVE the damn thing...
Have you checked the firing order? I know that sounds like a silly stupid question, but Scooper got that motor he bought for cheap because they had it wired wrong and wouldn't fire on one cylinder.
Put new Motorcraft plugs and wires in and Hawkco helped out with an Edlebrock carb and and 1 inch spacer, truck is running excellent now. Been driving it to work this week. Not that quick off the line, but it runs pretty strong if you drop it down a gear and get in it from a rolling start. Put about 3 lengths on my buddy's '92 305 powered 25th Anniversary Camaro from 40-70 mph. Going to try to get a video of the truck running/driving up on youtube soon.
Truck is running great, been driving it daily for about 3 weeks now, put 1700 miles on it. Been averaging around 16 mpg if I can keep my foot out of it.
