I previously posted the 68 Cyclone in the garage with my Comet. I am at the point of painting the engine compartment. I need to know if it would have been the original Calypso Coral (orange) or satin black. It is black right now and according to my cousin it always has been.
His dad bought it new in 68 from Ferrell L/M in Decatur GA and has never changed hands. However when I steam cleaned it the black came off and the body color was underneath. I want to spray the engine area before we drop the new engine in. Satin black or body color? Original is my preference. Any advice suggestions?

That's the way my 70 Maverick was/is, body color covered with black.

I suspect the body color engine compartment on Maverick may have been a cost-saving decision, as almost all other unibody Fords (including your Cyclone & '70 Mavericks) had black engine compartments. The black paint was a secondary processs so even though the black paint was less expensive than color, the additional labor no doubt added to the cost.

Below is the engine compartment of my '69 Fairlane. If you are not a member of the Fairlane Club, it would be well worth your time & money. The Fairlane Club includes 1962-1976 Fairlane, Torinos, and their Mercury counterparts. http://www.fairlaneclubofamerica.com

My 1970 Maverick Grabber was the same way. Body color, with black shot over the top at the factory.
