I had a TOMTOM One and it was not my friend even the day it gave up the ghost. I liked it when it was working but it had bad days. Seems the memory might be what caused it to fail once it was full. BUT, it acted querky from day one. Used it for about a year. I need a new navigator that has good memory and POI's. What have you guys been using? No cell phones please.. Unless you tell me it talks to you and stores the location with name and phone # etc.. I would like to use something for storing customers name, location, phone # information.. maybe even have notes for that customer. I do need a new phone so it's not totally out of consideration. Just that I prefer the two seperate units..
My personal preference is Garmin. I have had others and I think Garmins are the best IMO. I hve dropped my unit on concrete twice and it stills functions properly. They also seem to have the most accessories. It's like the Ipod; there are other Pld's, but Ipod is pretty much the standard of the industry. Garmin's are pretty much the only one's I wud buy for the forseeable future.
I just did a search and was not able to find anything resembling what you need. At least, nothing that is currently in production. Garmin used to make something called the iQue 3600, which was a handheld GPS and PDA rolled into one. It was able to do everything you requested. Unfortunately, they are no longer producing such GPS's. However, you may be able to find one on evilbay. If you need something to store addresses, names, phone #s, etc, the only practical option I can see is getting a new phone. I have an Android phone by HTC, which has a talking turn by turn GPS navigator for free. The only drawback is the $30/month data charge. It allows you to save locations, addresses and phone #s as well as email addresses and websites. But I'll keep searching tomorrow and see if I come up with anything else. EDIT: Also, my phone uses Google for the maps and includes POI's. Another option, and potentially more costly and bulky, is getting a Panasonic Toughbook, or something similar. They have built in SIM card slots for using the Cell phone towers for their internet, and I believe they have GPS capability. The electric company I do IT work for uses these in all their trucks for finding addresses and such, and (obviously) for storing information.
I was just looking at some new Garmin and am thinking about getting the phone as you described for the information stuff.. Pretty much as I had it but up grade to having the customers addresses. I have about 200 names and phone #s in my phone which does not have a place for the addresses. I remember where alot of them live but sometimes I need to plan a route and need addresses.. I once was loaned an HTC to see how I liked it and it was not that good.. It was an older unit though..
It may be the case with these newer phones anyway but what I did not like was that I could not send pics without having data service.. I could text but no pics in or out.. With my current phone I text and include pics if I want.. I felt like someone was trying to strong arm me into getting the data service, which I really am not convinced I need. So if I get a Garmin maybe I just need a basic phone that can store information..
TomTom Sucks!! Garmin is the way!!! I've had 2 Garmins, the first got old, and it didn't have the memory to update, so I bought another...Other than it puking out while we were on vacation in Florida it had everything I needed, after it died my wife insisted I go directly to Best Buy and get a Tom Tom (GPS are over priced in Orlando) Well, the Tom Tom sucks!! The way it gives directions stinks, and the way the display is stinks more! It doesn't have a way to add way points, but it does have the Darth Vader voice.....My next one will be another Garmin, probably soon!
I agree, TomTom One sucks, but it remains as my speedometer in my Mav, just because I have nothing else. The best I have found so far is the GPS built into my Android phone (Verizon Thunderbolt). I also use Navionics in my android phones, both this one, and my previous Motorola Droid. Great for being on the water.
I was partial to Garmin, too. First one I had was a Quest. Small and you could pop it out of the bracket and stick it in your shirt pocket for when you're walking around. But Garmin stopped supporting maps for it. Got a newer Garmin, now they want almost as much for new maps as what the unit cost new at Wally World. They want to just keep selling you new GPS's. Like others, now I just use my Android phone. With a phone the maps are always current because they're not stored in the phone, they are downloaded each time you use them.
Garmin has some new models out with lifetime map updates, check the Best Buy ads in your Sunday paper...
We have a weekly Friday paper.. Has about 7 or 8 pages and no major ads.. But I have looked at Walmart online and seen some intresting stuff.. I'm likely getting a Garmin and a new phone.
