Why would anybody want a old Chrysler Hemi? The cool factor! A friend of mine has a Rambler just like that, except his has the flathead 6. He is the second owner, car has only had one repaint, only has about 65,000 actual miles. He bought it from the original owner.
The supercharged Ecotech is pretty compact...Even came in an RWD configuration in the saturn sky and pontiac solstice...May want to consider it...
superchargers only came on the early ion redlines and cobalt ss's all solstice/sky were turbo (I was a saturn/pontiac tech when those cars came out)
Honda is the one with counter clockwise engines, their K series are normal rotation and they're freaking amazing. Like 400hp naturally asperated from 2 liters(K20). That would be my choice. The 2.4(K24) version are plentyful and cheap. Not to mention 40mpg. I looked into the volvo DOHC to 2.3 conversion before, it's way Way WAY harder than it sounds. Do some more research on it and you'll see why. The reason why bikes sound better is because they Rev higher.
Just do a 2.3 ford with a esslinger head they do not sound ricey ive owned a dozen. Another option would be a 3.0 mercruiser with a boss 429 hemi head and a turbo (These 4 cyls use a chevy trans pattern) and BBF head and pistons and rods 9
They all look to be FWD? I'm not "up" on anything new, especially eco-boxes. Any idea if this K20 ever came in a RWD? Cannot find pricing on the Esslinger heads, even though I've been looking. Found an article on someone using a "Zakspeed" DOHC conversion, but they're long gone out of business. What's up with the Mercruiser? All the info I see is this is a derivative of the old GM 4-cyl from the early 60's. I don't think a Boss'9 head's bore spacing will even be close. Got any sources for this?
Thats a cool pic, its got the Rambler a Grabber, Comet GT and possibly another Maverick. Love those old pics
I think the Mercruiser in question is half of a 460 Ford. Same bore as 429-460, a 429-460 head bolts right on.
I got all shivery on this 460 thing until I got to investigating it further. It's definitely NOT half of a 460, the head, pistons, and rods seem to be the only major parts that will interchange. That said, the block IS aluminum (big plus) but it's quite weak and there is no deck. Got to be a strain on those wimpy main caps! No cams available. The cylinder liners just float along with the headbolt bosses. Any kind of major HP increase would not be feasible. It would make a pretty sight though! Do a Google Search for Mercruiser 470 and you will see... I'm just now finding out that a Toyota 2JZ-GTE will likely fit, tight lengthwise but even if the firewall needs to be scalloped a bit it would be my 1st choice for a performance engine. Very easy to get 500 WHP from these and all kinds of parts availability too. Can use a factory ECM or MegaSquirt. There are adapters for GM automatics, and maybe for other trannies... If I decide to use an engine that needs no tinkering, just pop it in and run, I'll prolly go with a GM LY7. These are DOHC 3.7L 60° V-6s that make 263/270 from the factory. They're all over E-Bay in the $1500-2000 range with a 5 speed auto. Very complicated electronics may hold me back, besides an ECM they also have other computers that (may?) tie into it's operation.
