I came here and ranted about my tomtom a while back, maybe 6 months ago? :16suspect It gave me fits from day one. Some days it was great and others it almost saw concrete at 70 mph. I went and bought a new one yesterday. JUNK!!! Instructions are almost nill. I connected as it instructed and I get conflicting messages. I am supposed to get an activation code which I get a pop up saying not available at this time!?? So I am unable to register the stupid thing and I can't add it to my current accnt because I can't get the code. Not the way I wanted to start my day!! KMA tomtom! This pos is going back and I will get me a Garmin..
Yup, I went back to Garmin in December, way better than my Tom Tom ever was...even if I had a Garmin crap out on me while on vacation..
Garmin all the way! I'm on my 3rd one, 1st one still works, my second one quit talking, they replaced it under warranty. Planning on getting another new one in a few weeks when I get enough points on my fuel card. My Pa in law has a Tomtom pos. A lot harder to program than my Garmin, if you can even get it to program. And the maps on it look screwy to me.
Garmin, sets the standard for all consumer GPS units - IMO. Nothing else comes close. My Nuvi is abt 5yrs old and still clicking. I know non of them are 100% foolproof/accurate, but, I feel Garmin is the best of the rest. Won't waste money on anything else...
I sent a message to tomtom letting them know how I feel.. I didn't even try to repackage it. I threw it all in a bag for when I go back to Sams on Wednesday. I happen to like the features and the layout of the tomtom. But what good is it if I can't get it to function consistantly. Soooo fustrating.
Tom Tom always seems late, to give directions, and it doesnt give any advanced warnings like Garmin, in heavy traffic areas I like that.
Just use the GPS on your cell phone. Android or iPhone, either are better than TomTom. My TomTom has been put in the maverick, for use as ONLY a speedometer. Nothing else. "There is no route planned."
Not everyone has internet on their phone. AND I would rather keep them seperate because I drive through alot of school zones and don't need the officers assuming I am on the cell..
Not everyone has internet on their phone, but if they did, they wouldn't need a Garmin or TomTom. $9 for an extra mount to stick it to your windshield, and BOOM! not using a cell phone in a school zone. I kicked and screamed when forced to get a "smart phone", but it sure beats having a TomTom, mp3 player, cell phone, laptop (for internet), digital camera, etc all laying around in my car. I now have it all in my pocket, ready for use at any time.
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and have been using co-pilot GPS... its freaking AMAZING. Co-Pilot GPS has offline maps, and it stores things like restaurants, gas stations, etc for offline searching, pops em up as your driving down the road. Used it on my trip down to California last month and it was great when I was trying to find a gas station at 2 am with no cell reception.
Gene, i have a "dead" cell phone that the gps still works and i used to use it on the boat for mp3 and lake maps on gps. Internet worked, but only thru wifi, not through phone internet service. "Dead" meaning i bought a new phone and deactivated the old one from my verizon service. So ask around for someone's old deactivated phone that still gets gps, and you should be set. I will look around the house and see if i still have it. I think i gave it to a younger cousin for her introduction to smart phones, but i dont remember if she chickened out or if she took it. My tablet is WiFi only. I downloaded the maps through the Co-Pilot app and they are always available. I only had to download the region I needed (Pacific Northwest, and Southwest US). This would be available to any GPS enabled android device. MSmith, that is basically how my "dead" Android is. I can bring it home, download new maps, then take it on the road and the GPS still works.
