Yea I know, I'm looking for a small phone with gps to load SpeedHUD onto so I always have it up. FYI, SpeedHUD is totally AWESOME. Also really liking the Dashcam app I got... it's uh... Dashboard Cam is what it's called. I'll have to post my set-up when it's finished. So far excluding the tablet I'm about 50 dollars into my set-up, and the only thing I still need really is the rear view camera, which should only set me back another 30 or so. I tore out the junky early 80s sears tapedeck that changed stations whenever I hit a bump and put in an amplifier that accepts input from my tablet AND my cellphone (when I take a call on my phone it cuts the music and switches to the phone) for 30 dollars on eBay. Anyway now I am getting WAY off topic... sorry I've just been having a lot of fun geeking out on my car since I spent all my money for parts on a trip to Disneyland (family first).
Yall are talking about intresting stuff.. I got me a Garmin yesterday. I charged it in the truck all night as it says to do. I unplug it to bring it in and it turns on .. WTH?? .. So since it is on I kinda poke around and see what it/she sounds like. She has to sound sexy haha. I pick Michelle since she sounds kinda hot . I shut it off.. I bring it inside and set it down to fix a sandwich and a drink.. Ten minutes goes by when I hear it making beep sounds. WTH??.. It's turning on and showing 1-10 pages of demo?? I am begining to HATE these navigation devices!! I brought it in because I am supposed to download maps per the instructions. Why in the blankety blank blank is it turning on on it's own just sitting there??
I'm sure I am doing something wrong.. I registered the Garmin and went through all the diming and full on screen lighting, it shutting off and turning on and freaking out my hardware wizzard. Now I am sitting here waiting for it to finish downloading "Full Coverage Of North America". Showed it would take 2 hrs!! WTH?? Seems it should already have come loaded.. I feel like it's loading it when it don't need to. I have no clue about this crap..
Yea those Garmins have really slow network speeds. Also the Full map of the USA is REALLY massive. but yea 2 hours is stupid slow. Good luck with the Garmin, I've heard they are a bear to set up. They don't come pre-loaded with maps because they get sold in too many different markets. Would you want to have maps of North America if you lived in Brazil?
When I was poking into it earlier in the truck it showed me maps. I typed in my home address and it showed me the route from my shop to the house.
Ah but these are UPDATED maps! (I know... I know...) I say it all the time...the end goal of technology is to give me more time to sit on my butt and wait for it to do stuff.
It's like watching a dozen eggs boil over here.. One at a time! Starting with cold water each time too. Sheeese!
Yea... I was 7 minutes late for a meeting this morning because the new album I was downloading on spotify stopped halfway through... I mean there were other factors but this was the one that made me leave the house without my usual buffer.
I think they are preloaded, but they immediately want you to update the maps. I watched a TomTom go from fine working out of the box, to a worthless piece of plastic with no operating system, after an update. I had to get it back to its stock configuration, and I never touched it again. Maps BE DAMNED! I just use it for a speedometer, now.
My latest one came with, US, Canada, and Mexico. I find their server slow, but considering all the people with GPS out there, it's no wonder.
Pretty much sums it up. Except I will return it if Garmin support can't help me. And it better be a simple fix.
They told me all I needed to do was put an 8GB card in it. I didn't have time to get one today. I spent most of my day flipping through a Mapsco looking for the fastest routes to the stops I had to make today..
