aftermarket wheel centering???

I did a search and came up with nada. In a nutshell, my car has rode like crap for as long as Ive had my wheels (American Racing Daisies). Been working with a tire place to figure out why. They checked everything twice and this is what they think. The factory wheels are hub centered, the aftermarkets are lug centered. They said there is a spacer type thing that fits inside the back of the rim and sits snug on the hub. They had some, but not the right size for the Mav. Anyone ever hear of these things? I searched online and cant find them. What are they called? Lastly, does this sound right or are they just blowing smoke?

Magnum-500 wheels are lug-centric, but are never a problem as long as they are balanced properly with a lug-centric adapter used on the balancing machine.

 

What size are our hubs?

The manly name is America Racing 200's. I had them on my 72 Comet with the same issues. I really liked the way they look but using a shank style lug nut with slotted holes wasn't worth the hassle. A hub-centric ring would be the best thing for it. I use a hub centric ring for my current disc brake set up that could be modified if you have the dimensions you need.

 

What was the size of the wheel hub bore, do you remember?

 

Mavericks don't have millimeters. Everything is in inches.

 

I'm sorry, I don't. The car was totaled and they went with it. If you use a decent shop for tire work, you might be able to get the tech to measure them for you if you don't want to disassemble it yourself.

 

That would convert to 2.77 or 2.78 inches, is that about right?

 

Im working with one now, they are going to see if they can get a set but they didnt tell me the size. If I can find out I will do it on my own and save the time of sitting at the tire place for an hour and a half.

 

My experience is that I have had American Racing 200S wheels on every Ford I have ever owned since 1969 and never had the problem you describe. Two sets use shanked lug nuts to locate the wheel and the other two sets used conical shaped lug nuts. My current Maverick has the 7" x 14" 200s wheels I used on my first Maverick 30 years ago and they were on my daughter's '95 Ranger until I bought my current car. I also have a pair of 10" x 15" steel rim/aluminum center CP200 wheels that were widened to 14" x 15" and I never had a problem with them either. These are my favorite wheels and I own 4 1/2 sets of them in various sizes for three different Ford bolt patterns.
