Last night I needed to drill new holes in the wall mount for a new television. I grabbed the first bit in the drawer close to the size I wanted and threw it on the chuck. It was a Harbor Freight bit that never been used before. I thought I notice the bit looked like it slowed down some when it bit into the metal right before it started to wobble. I didn't give it much thought because I was almost finished drilling. After the smoke cleared I cut the drill press off I notice the drill bit.
Wow, a bit soft I would say! I had one that you could bend in your fingers like a piece of play-doh. It came in a B&M shift kit and when I went to drill the plate it folded and then wrapped up in my shirt before the drill finally stopped. Sacred the hell out of me and scratched up my belly pretty good.
I've bought a few sets of their steeped drill bits, and the work awesome, we beat the crap outta them at work, and for $9.99, they can't be beat.
Back in the nineties, I worked for Morrison Knudsen, rebuilding EMD locomotives - to save money they bought drill bits from Yugoslavia - I found some with the cutting tip cut backwards and others that were cut completely straight - no cutting angle at all
I too have quite a few things I have gotten there. It is kinda hit and miss if it will last. I know this when I purchase something there and don't feel bad when it fails. I am really happy though for the stuff that has held up and saved ne a bundle. I use ALOT of 1" "chip" brushes. I was buying them at Home Depot for like .97c each. I now buy them at HF by the box when they are on sale. They now cost me about .16c ea.. Same kind of savings on their 4 1/2" cut off blades. As for drill bits. I have found that once I have used it in a drill press I am unable to use it in a electric drill. And piolet tip bits end up in the scrap as the tip becomes a problem.. I am curious of the speed and thickness the metal was..
For conversational purposes only.. I'm no expert but that seems low.. I set my belts to no less than 800. I seem to break and make these "spread" bits when going slower. Watching it happen, it seems to grab instead of cut.. Then when I go say around 1200 rpms it seems to want to burn the tip. Now when I use a hole saw I do go slower and I use oil.. Of course looking at the tip of your drill it looks cooked. Maybe a drop of oil could have saved this..
