Swapped to disc brakes have a few ?'s

I just swapped to discs on my car and now my brake lights don't work. I know I put the switch back on correctly, if I look at the switch while pressing the pedal it moves a little but not enough to bottom it out in the little window to activate the lights (best I can describe it). Could it be the push rod that came with the new M/C or is there a different switch I need? Also the pedal feels a lot higher, can I use the push rod from my old drum M/C or is there a way to shorten the push rod?

 

I've never seen that "little window" you speak of...
if it is the rod, you can get one from Mustangunlimited that is adjustable...(or make one as I did)...

With some effort the rod will come out(held by a little clip)...

I'd just use original rod, and do on mine...

 

yep, need to change to a shorter rod. it can be pulled out of the old cylinder.
also did you put on power brakes or manual brakes. i have found the spring in some brake switches to be too heavy to work with the easy effort of the power brakes.

 

I have manual brakes, I'll give the old rod a try when I get hoe from work tonight.

I could be wrong.... but when I had the opposite problem of my lights staying on, the length of the rod didn't matter (it was adjustable). There was simply too much material (metal was too thick) on the far side of the rod's eyelet.

Could it be an opposite problem, where there is just not enough metal on the far side of the rod's eyelet?

 

The last rod I removed from the master cylinder was locked in there so good that I destroyed the master cylinder removing it.

 

I've never had any luck getting one out...

 

I've taken the rod out of old M/Cs, but it breaks the retaining clip inside, so you'll have to get a new one when you reinstall the rod in the other M/C ( and I have no idea who sells those clips).

 

The clip usually isn't necessary, once the rod is attached to the brake pedal, it(pedal) doesn't lift up far enough to pull out of the cylinder... If going that route would be a good idea to double check...

The one from my drum brake cylinder pulled out with almost no effort, seemed fairly secure in the replacement MC though... The clip is sort of shaped like a three point star, I'd think a thin piece of metal tubing cut down the center(then "C" shaped) would fit down to the clip and compress it enough to dislodge it...
