i'm looking into buying a mav in another state and having it shipped to me but the seller doesn't take paypal. my question is how do i pay for it and be sure that i get the car? just looking for options and opinions. thanks in advance russ
Hmmmm What payment options do they take? If its a cashiers check or a money order, etc etc etc run away. I personally wouldn't buy a car without being able to see it and see the title and proof of ownership. Paypal would protect you somewhat but too risky for my personal tastes.
Pics are fine and all but what is his preferred method of payment? Like I said if its a money order or cashiers check then its a scam. If its legit there are plenty of shippers out there willing to verify the title and all that and pay the seller upon pickup.
would you by fruit over the phone..?? It may not be a option for you, but in person is the best way to go. That way you won't be disappointed in something they "forgot to mention" or didn't show up in a picture. May have to bite the bullet and wait for sumpthin a tad closer. Remember deals and cars come and go every couple of weeks. It won't be the only "jewel" you run across.
You can have your bank wire the money to the seller's bank. You can also send money Western Union. You really need to see the car in person...unless you are getting it really cheap.
I bought mine sight unseen and that's what we did. There has to be a level of trust on somebody's part at some point in the transaction and it is not without risk. Once I saw a picture of the clean title I sent the money to his bank. Once he received it, he overnighted the paperwork to me. During that period of time the risk was mine but I was comfortable because I felt a level of trust with him. I then transferred the title, set up a shipper and he helped load it. I agree it would have been better to see it in person but I was never disappointed with the deal.
All of the above payment methods leave you in the same boat. The seller will have the money before you have the car. That is typical of any long distance sale. The only way to know if the car is what you want is to have an inspection done. In the past I have purchased cars from a long distance away and the best thing to do is have someone local drive and look over the car. Maybe even someone from this forum. I bought a 59 impala long distance and simply contacted the AACA local chapter and they were more than willing to check it out for me. They drove it, took pictures and emailed me with their opinions. They even refused any compensation. I purchased the car and sent them a gift to thank them for their time.
I didn't think about it before but post up the sellers location and see who is close by that can look at it, like mentioned above. I'm sure someone on here can go check it out especially since we all like maverick / comets lol. I know if it was close to me I'd be happy to go and look at it for you and give you my opinion and check paper work for you.
lol, no i wouldn't buy fruit over the phone.. as to buying something in my area just ain't happening everything is pretty much rusted. i haven't spoken to the owner but he is a member here just don't know much about him. he's the one selling the yellow 71 grabber in arizona. his members name is mavtricks71. on his ebay listing he said he didn't take paypal so that got me wondering.
That's a nice car! I bought mine sight-unseen and I overnighted a bank draft. There was lots of communication via e-mail and phone calls, even video. Like others have said, I felt a certain amount of trust, and I didn't want the car to get away on me. I looked at several local cars for almost the same price but they were either poorly executed Grabber clones or just way too rusty. As far as condition, there was a MMB member who had seen the car in person and provided a very well-written, unbiased review and included extra pictures. THAT helped a bunch, and allowed me to pull the trigger without reservation. The cowl was about the only thing that was unexpected, but the car was worth putting the time and money into, IMHO.
i bought a good work car for my wife on ebay it was a no reserve car 2 days ago, it was in Pennsylvania...everything went smooth he even gave me a shipper that was 400-500 dollars cheaper than other companies... this is my first time but i know a few people who have bought cars over the internet... he also didnt want me to pay with paypal but rather cashiers check or bank wire... but i ended up paying with a credit card so i will have some type of protection, we agreed on 2% of the cost which was less than 45 dollar... it was a good price something i really couldnt pass up..
Where in AZ russ? My dad lives in Phoenix I'm sure he would go look at it and make sure the paper work was legit. He is a solid car guy. Let me know.
