Disposing of used brake fluid...in oil recycle?

    What is the accepted manner for disposing of used/dirty brake fluid?

    Is it ok to add to my recycled oil container?

    All depends on where you take it, some places will just take fluids in general, so want them labeled and separated. I know here I can take anything to the hazardous waste depot, no questions asked.

    At Pep Boys we only separated coolant from all others.

    I have no idea what brake fluid is made of...I know coolant is alcohol/water based, and would never mix it with oil.

    If the brake fluid is petroleum-based, it should mix right in with the used oil and recycle with it.

    But I don't want to pour it in, have it not mix, and end up with 5 gallons of used oil I cannot get rid of.

    We dispose of brake fluid with oil at my work. Like said above coolant is disposed only differently.

    We have a waste oil heater at work. Brake fluid/trans fluid/motor oil...It all goes in the holding tank...It all burns...The heater dont care. You can mix it with the waste oil...It wont care either.

    Try mixing a little brake fluid with a little oil. If they mix, you're all set! If not, I know it burns. :)

    Really? It burns?

    I could add it to the burn barrel, if so. And if it does not mix with the oil.

    I added some non-synthetic gear oil, it floated on top of the brake fluid. Shook it up a bit, and it quickly separated, with the oil on top.

    Will try to burn a small amount tomorrow, if it stops raining.

    I only have about a pint, so not a large quantity.

    Dot 3. I will check on it tomorrow.

    Probably dump it in the oil, anyway. It isn't very much. Wouldn't be able to see it in a 5 gallon bucket of oil.

    Brake fluid is good for stripping some paints, but I have never tried used-up nasty brake fluid. Mostly it was containers that had been opened and then sat for months. You don't want to use brake fluid that has had the seal broken more than 6 months earlier because it starts collecting small amounts of water in it.
