Well here is a photo of my 1972 RUG out of my Torino - it is definitely a long tail shaft 4 speed. Looking at the 2 photos together, your tail housing does not appear to be as long as mine
Here is my old toploader. I used my original V8 C4 driveshaft and cross member. Trans case: C5AR 7006-D Tag: RUG J1 014666 According to David Kee's website, thats for a 1967 Fairlane, 390, wide and 28-spline. And YES, I ran the wrong input shaft for years, I'm not sure what it is gonna look like one I open it up someday.
AFAIK there are two only two length in the later transmissions and difference is in tail housing(likely exception for trucks), measurement is from front of case to end of tail shaft... Early Falcon & Mustang may have used a shorter version, some only had a 25 spline output(that were prone to breakage).. Full size all got 27", some Torinos also got this size(what's in my 428 Cobra Jet with 31 spline output)... Mustang from '67 all got 24", also most Fairlane/Torino thru '71... Excepting for 428/429 these all had a 28 spline output, big engines got 31... BTW I'm refering to the 4-speeds but the three followed same pattern... No three speed avail for 428/429(exception '66 Police Interceptor, State Trooper that lived in neighborhood had one) http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/idchart1.htm http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/3speedidchart.htm
