mystery port on carb

    hi, im a new member here, and a bit new to car stuff in general. i took my mav for a test drive and it seems to have carb troubles. its a new carb i bought off ebay and cant figure out what i need to hook into this port (its a carb for a 250 i6)

    My apologies for seeming unhelpful in the other thread.. was in a hurry to run out and just a quick response to help you get the question answered more quickly by others who may have an exact idea based on the hose routing. Didn't forget about you completely though and logging back in I did notice that Fordmaster replied in the other thread.

    "It is a float bowl vent, it really doesn't need anything on it. It is part of the evap system to keep fumes from the atmosphere".

    Was one of my guesses too and looks to be thermostatically or relay controlled. Likely plumbed into the manifold, charcoal canister and/or air cleaner assembly.

    Only other thing I figured it could possibly be was an overflow/return valve(similar to a vent but for rerouting fuel back into the inlet side of the fuel pump during stuck float/oveflow situations. That would allow fuel to bypass filling the intake manifold causing severe engine flooding(avoid hydrolocking). Not sure why that system would have any type of electrical connection as that one appears to have.. but the hose barb style would indicate a lower pressure/vent style configuration so I think the first reply would be closer to the actual target application.

    As for not using it?.. not really sure there either. But.. if there is no other vent location for the fuel bowl?.. you may have issues with pressure creep caused by vapor buildup and fuel swell(the density/volume of fuel can change with temps) relating to fuel temp increases if it is not operable. And if it did open due to an overflow or venting situation?.. you most definitely would not want that thing spewing fuel back onto the top of the motor due to fire hazard. At the very least I would connect a hose to blow against it to see if it is open to the atmosphere. IF.. the bowl is sealed?.. you would want to figure out the electrical connection and get it routed accordingly or you may have the issue mentioned above. And if it is open?.. figure a way to vent it back into the motors induction system/charcoal canister.. or at least run a drip hose towards the bottom of the engine bay some place where it can't light up any of the passengers in the cockpit during a raw fuel spillage scenario. Fuel systems are very dangerous.. essentially have a die cast gas filled bomb sitting on top of your engine.

    well some light was shed on my carb issues today, the ebay seller shipped my new carb......and forgot to put the acceleration pump inside it

    The vent is operated manually by the accelerator linkage. As you accelerate the vent opens to relieve any pressure/vacuum in the float bowl. Thus making a neutral space for the fuel to sit. Those are perfectly good carbs and were used by Ford for many years.

    ok update on my carb, ive mentioned i had carb issues. its just the accelerator pump. ive ran into a new problem, my gas gauge dosnt say how much fuel i have in the tank. i know the wireing in the dash that goes to the needle is perfect (had the dash off today what a pain) so im thinking it could be fuel sensor related

    also has enyone put the rack and pinnion power bolt on rack from unisteer on their maverick? im saving up for one and wanna know how much it improves steering and handling
