I've been looking at the T5 swap. I found a good site here describing the different T5s. After some research it appears the best T5s can handle about 330lbs/ft of torque. Not a lot! Has anyone found the T5s capable of holding up behind a 400-450hp 347?
There are companies that make gear sets that are supposed to hold up to 600hp(like g-force), but I have heard the case isn't very strong either and the aftermarket gear sets are a waste of money. Now with that said there are plenty of high h.p. cars running t5's, as long as your not dumping the clutch or power shifting it'll probably live behind 450hp. Personally I would look into a tko, probably a lot more $$$, but I like banging gears and not worrying about shattering the trans.
I ran my T5Z behind a nitroused 347 for a few years without problems. The tires spin before you hurt the trans. But I also wouldn't recommend running slicks and sidestepping the clutch at 5000 rpm... Power shifting 3rd gear can cause problems.
He He, I have the T-Shirt for that one... But it was a stock pre'89 trans, with upgraded gear set it was fine...
Thanks for the responses. Obviously, the Z spec T5 is the best. No worries on the 5k RPM side step and slicks!
