Yes, there is a 3.25 ratio for the 8-inch. A buddy from work recently aquired one to put into his '66 Mustang. I have no idea what it came out of. I think there was a 3.70 as well...
I remember something about a 3.70... maybe one ring gear brand... all of my brainspace has been taken up by work. I can't remember car specs like I used to... sucks to get old, huh?
Alright here are the FACTS my dad bought the car in 1976 from the original owner(a friend) since then he has owned it, never swapped the rear-end or engine. It has a 250(4.1L) six, I know I rebuilt the cylinder head. The rear-end is an integral carrier, the back cover plate is the only thing that bolts on. The rear end code is WDV-K (possibly WDY-K, but looks like a V). I searched the internet which turned up WDY-K = 8" 3.08:1 rear-end 70-75 mavericks. "The most prevalent...7 1/4 in. ring and pinion gear... is found on six cylinders exclusively." - Chilton's 1966-73 American cars Copyright 1972 pg C445. I have pictures of the rear end, rear-end tag, and will get door tags if someone can tell me how to post them, or will post them for me.
That is not an 8" rear. That explains why it is 3.08! stmanser: I don't currently have a 3.55 gear handy. Sorry. Dave
Definitely not an 8". Looks like a 7.5". Get the door tag code for the axle and we can tell you what was in the car originally.
MountainMav said that the back cover is the only thing that bolts on.........do the 7.5 rear ends have a bolt on cover? if thats the case, then my rear end in the mav (which was a 6 cyl car) has an 8 inch....because the rear cover is a bowl.... this is weird.....or the guy that had the car before me swapped rear ends before......but why swap with a 4 lug rear end......... hmmmm......things that make you go hmmmm
Could have torn up a 7.5 and put his 8 inch axles in it? Not sure if thats possible, dont know much about 7.5's but just an idea
there isnt a rear cover on a 8 inch rear end......its a front loader..... thats why i asked....i was wondering if my rear end is a 8 inch....but my car was a 6 cyl car.....i am so confused.....why is ford diong this to me....
Just kinda throwing this out as food for thought....but could it possibly be a 7.5 out of a early Fox body Stang or something of the sort? It would help with the 4-lug explination too, possibly.... Of course, then there would be evidence of where the Stang suspension mounts were on the housing, wouldn't there? I dunno... odd.
I was just saying, maybe IF the axles do interchange, he found a housing or whatever w/ no axles, or he wanted to keep the 4 lug pattern all the way around. Never know, just putting out possibilities I dont know if the 7.5 are C clip or bolts like a 8'' or 9''
Some of these posts are getting confused... It's very simple. That is the 7.5 rear. They were all 4 lug and are NOT performance parts. The 8" rears came both 4 and 5 lug. Early 6 cars got the 4 lugs. All 8s have 5 lugs. A couple years into production, all 8" rears have 5 lug regardless of engine. The 8" has no rear cover. 4 and 5 lug versions do not swap axles or brakes, but chunks are the same. The 7.5" does have a rear cover. This rear was used also in early Stangs and Falcons. It is the granddaddy of the later 8.8" and some other short lived versions Ford played with as it phased out the 8/9" rears. Hope this unconfuses some folks. Dave
