I never used to have any issues filling the gas tank but now every time I fill I end up getting gas all down the back of the car. The gas it coming out of the opening where nozzle is, I have tried different angles and not much helps. This seems like a dumb issue, any idea what might cause this?
I put '75-'77 unleaded filler neck on my '74 and the problem went away. Comet filler necks use a different bolt pattern than the Maverick's neck so find a Maverick neck or you will need to drill a new hole. If you already have the later filler neck then maybe the piece inside the neck fell off and is laying in the bottom of your tank.
How would I know which filler neck I have? My car is a 73 but vehicles this old who knows what's original.
I find pumping the gas as slow as possible....and clocking the gas pump at about the 4 o'clock position helps as well.
I had a 75 and have a 72. One with the large opening, and one with the small unleaded flapped opening. Both had the same problem when you try to pump the gas full speed. The 75 was the worst. I agree with Craig, pump slower and rotate the nozzle to find a sweet spot. I don't know if these were dorked from day one, or if something happens to the tank venting that causes it, but it is a known problem. It just gives you extra time at the pump to tell people it is not a Camaro, Mustang, Nova, Vega.
Look, I have been asked all of the above. Don't forget all the people who want to tell you they had one in highschool.
Unlike electronic display pumps today I do believe the old pumps would jump timing or strip a gear or two trying to keep up being accurate since the price of gasoline is 10+ times higher per gallon today. First photo shows how the price/gallon is displayed on old gas pumps...2nd photo show how the price per gallon is set.
I agree with Craig...back in the day when I worked at a station. A car could come in for a fill up and I would put the nozzle in, turn it on, check the tire pressure, the oil, wash the windshield and would still be pumping gas when the customer got back from the restroom...
