I'm on a roll and the weather is crappy so inside projects rule. When I was at Carlisle, I got an NOS Maverick side view remote mirror for a very good price. Of course, I checked it out before reaching in my pocket but obviously not quite good enough. When I was going to install it, I found one of the two cables that move the mirror head was broken at the joystick base. Whether or not the vendor knew this, well I don't know. Too late to fret about that. I tried several attempts to reattach it without success. Finally, I drilled the base as reattaching it to the cable stop wasn't happening without destroying the base itself. No room to play around. No filler or adhesive I tried would adhere properly to the base which is pot metal of some kind. Really kind of looks like lead. I was inspired this morning and since I had the hole drilled, I got an eyeglass screw, cut it to fit length wise, and threaded it in the hole trapping the cable. I ground the head down with a diamond bit on the Dremel so it could clear for adjusting the mirror angle. Lo and behold it worked! The mirror is usable again. Don't give up on fixing things that look like they won't ever be fixable. This is especially true for things you might not be able to easily find again or when your budget is low like mine is. Some ingenuity and thinking outside of the box usually works. God bless MacGyver.
