    I'd be torn too.
I love my car, even if it seems like a never-ending cycle of repairs.
I've thought about selling it and getting a "new" old car like the 5.0 mustang which I've always liked, even as a kid. But then the attention I get outweighs my issues with my car.

I had a lady pull me over yesterday just to look at my car, which is far from perfect. she was just happy to see a Comet. I suppose the only reason I keep mine is that it runs and draws positive attention. If it wasn't running I'd have got rid of it long ago, sadly.

You're in a hard spot I think, and I fell for ya. Do what you think is right I say.

I would hate to part with the Maverick, but I'm going through this with my son right now. I am dying to buy him a really cool old classic as his first car. Be it a Maverick or some other Ford brand, but my spouse makes a good point. The Mustang has more safety equipment and would be a safer vehicle for a beginning driver. Of course my argument is that I survived my youth and so did all my friends, but you can't argue airbag and three point harness safety. Not to mention the parts for a Mustang are easier to come by and mods are much more plentiful and there are good deals to be had on running cars. In the end you may regret selling the Maverick and want to get back into it, but they aren't that expensive right now and it sounds like your skillset would match better with the Mustang.

Other then air bags, you can add lots of safety into a Maverick. Better belts, roll bar/cage and frame connectors, disc brakes and use the '73 and later doors for the guard beams

Granted, I could put all that stuff into a Maverick...and probably have to one extent or another on my own...but I can buy the Mustang and not have to. I'm just sayin...I wouldn't trade my Maverick for a Mustang, but then when I'm talking about the safety of my kid it is a different story. I only drive my Maverick on nice sunny days (collectors insurance limits the miles as well) and it doesn't have to be a daily driver. As for the belts and roll cage, they are great. All of which have a price tag and skill level to install as well. But you have to climb over the roll bar and the belts have to be used in order to be effective. A five point belt takes more time and effort to latch than a stock 3 point with a single clip. I think that most teens would put the disk brakes and late model doors (with the beams) low on the list of priorities. I know my kids would. Please don't get me wrong...love my Maverick and I would love my kid to have one. But I want him to live to a ripe old age as well (long after I am gone), and I know what I did and didn't do as a teen. In the end, this isn't my decision...I'm just giving an alternative and maybe some insight into what this young mans father was thinking in bringing up the alternative. The 15 years between when the Maverick was manufactured and when the fox body Mustang was built made enormous strides in safety. I'm not trying to talk the boy out of it, I just want him to know what he's getting into.

You're in a Mav forum...asking if you should get a stang? Trading the Mav no less? Mustangs are like camaro's and belly buttons.....everyone's got one or had one.
    :D

Just go buy the stang(gag) and keep both.

Trust me i know how ya feel,i got my mav at 15 and didnt get to drive it til almost the end of my senior year 3 freaking years,it sucked but ya know what im 19 now and i wouldnt trade my mav for anything. She aint the prettist, the fastest,or the coolest(to some people),but she's mine and me and my dad built her and there's nothing better than that and i think all father and sons should go through it. and the radiator and hoses are cheap hose's are like 35 or so from oreillys and radiators are cheap i got a aluminum racing radiator for 230 off ebay some one alot of guys here have and you can get a normal 1 for alot cheaper.

As a parent, let me say thanks. :thumbs2: My hat is off to you for considering family funds however I can't believe that there is an enexpensive 80's Mustang out there that does not need it's share of repairs. If the Mav is your first, I would think long and hard before letting her go. I would take a wild stab and say that there probably isn't one of us on this forum that hasn't wished they had their first car back. :hmmm: Good luck.

I bought mine in 1997 and have driven it a total of 2 miles. It's been a project since I got it. Getting closer every day these days. (it has had periods of years that I didn't touch it but have always been collecting parts here and there.)

    The maverick

ilovemy1974mavy , are you keeping the maverick? So, you're about fifteen and your dad helped you buy a maverick? Very cool. Nice to see a young person with an understanding of family finances. OK, here is the deal. If you're keeping the maverick I'll get you started. For the cost of shipping I'll send a pair of V8 frame stands and V8 cast iron exhaust manifolds. So, ya keepin it?
