For summary skip to the bottom of this post.

I stumbled upon this classified in my search for classic cars. I've been looking for a muscle car to make my own for quite a while now, but I had yet to see a Maverick, therefore, I didn't know a good price. This guy wants 2400 for the car, but will go down to 2000. I've been looking at the ads on this forum and have seen some nicer Mavericks going for very similar prices. So would I be getting stiffed if I were to pay 2000 - 2400 for a '76 Maverick?

This is what the guy said after I emailed him asking about the car. I don't know if by fresh he means a completely new engine and trans, but I assume its all stock so not new. Either way, what are your opinions?

Too long, didn't read: I want to buy this 1976 Maverick for 2000 - 2400, runs well, not obvious problems, is it worth it?

i think grabbers were discontinued after 75. if it runs good and everything works $1000 to $1500 would be my opinion. good luck

I would have to agree that they didn't build grabbers after 1975. The car is basicly worth what you are willing to pay for it. Look at it from the point of, what would it take to make it what you want it to be. Good luck. :tiphat:

75 was the last year for the Grabber. The only special Maverick in 76 was the stallion. If the car is solid it's worth the 2k in my opinion. When you look at it pour water over the cowl section and make sure there are no leaks into the inside. Look under the car as well. North East Mavericks are usually a little more prone to rust with all the salt they see in their lifetime. If it looks and runs good 2k is a pretty good price for it.
    Hope it helps,
    Jerry

    I agree with Jerryfow2.
If it really is rust free as claimed, and given that it is a V8 (v8 swap parts aren't free), has dual exhaust, and what appears to be intact black interior, $2K is not unreasonable for the car.

i was thinking the same thing when I saw the black interior and the blacked out trim on the windshield and such. i would check to see if any silver, yellow, red or blue is on the inside of the door jamb. Could be but the only way to know for sure is a marti report.
    Good Luck with it!

The horsepower on these cars isn't particularly high for their weight is it? I mean I read somewhere that a 73 v8 302 has 138hp, to the 2800 pounds seems a little low right? Perhaps I'm wrong, I'm still new to muscle cars. Still need to get my first and start. But I learn quickly, any information is appreciated.

Thanks for all the info guys, and helpful little tips. Through searching more I found this one too, a 1973 Maverick, I think he just popped the hood on for the cooler look of the grabber hood.

Same here, 302 V8. But this one is only 1500 so I'm giving it more thought.

I'm guessing advice would be the same here, what to look for and such. Does anybody know inherent problems with either of these two years or just those odd ball things to look for or realize?

    Pictures time.

i would deffinatly go check out the 73. it is a little cheaper and is pre catalitic converter. if everything checks out and you feel it's a good car go for it. plus it's an ac car.

your budget and 'skill range' are big factors in buying a project....

    both cars have things about them that make them desirable;
'76-black deluxe bucket seat interior, V8, p/s, disc brakes.... from the pics it looks like something u could build on and drive at the same time but costs more
'73-V8, p/s, a/c, somewhat better appearence because of the bumpers, grabber hood.... this one looks like it needs more work, lots of interior attention, drum brakes in front but is $500 cheaper..

so i think the real question is... how much is $500 worth of work, worth to you?? :)

you could spend $500 on the front brakes alone!
