I'm installing Hoker Hedders on my 302 Mav. Is there a trick to getting the drivers side on other than the drop down bracket for the power steering? I seem to remember someone saying to jack up the drivers side of the motor but cannot remember.
yes it helps if you drop the ps bracket but you can also pull the motor mount bolts and put a floor jack under the oil pan using a piece of 2x4 or something in between the jack and pan but if you jack the motor up the headers will go right into place with no problem at all but once the header is in place let the motor down and put the bolts in
cool, thanks. Dumb question but would I have to undo the transmission from the crossmember underneath?
No, keep transmission hooked up. Loosen the motor mount bolts to almost off, but keep them threaded in a thread or two so you don't have to re-allign them to get them back in. Jack up the engine and the header will slide right in from underneath. Get that car up as high as you can first, because you have to attack it from below. it will not go in from the top.
it's been many years (like high school 1982) when I replaced my 250 with a 302. Then I remember having to lift the engine with the engine hoist to get the headers to slide into place. Still not easy but it will work. Good luck.
And to be safe, you can actually lift the motor by jacking at the bellhousing, to minimize chances of denting the oil pan.
Thanks for the input guys. I got everything loose and ready to lift the motor when it started raining. I'm doing the job in my driveway so I had to wrap it up for the day. I'm gonna get up bright and early tomorrow morning and get this project finished. I'm dieing to hear this car run again.
hooker headers on my maverick i took the single bolt out of the motor mount' if it goes in from the front of the motor you will have to take the oil filter off' then i loosened the two bolts that hold the trans to the crossmember' it makes a big difference if you take the plugs out. i then jacked the motor up about two inch's . you will have turn the wheel a little for clearance of the pitmen arm.do it this way and the header will go right on ' you will have to wedge it a little or it will fall right back out when you let go.
Yes, the pitman arm hit mine, as well, and put a nice dent in one of the tubes. Now that I think about it, these headers "really" do not fit our cars...
pics of my "modified" aka heavily dented header can be found in my restoration thread - they did not go in very well on the driver side. passenger side was easy, though!
i have hedman headers and i had a problem with the bolts not staying in and the pipes were too close to the holes so i had to go with a 5/16 bolt
