I like the solid black out, but I also liked the hood on the green Maverick a member did over-sized sort of like a Torino a couple years ago.

Debating wheather to do anything on my hood or just have the Comet scoop black.

I hear ya.. and to each his own... and that's of course part of the beauty of doing things to your own personal taste when mod'ing your own stuff.

IMHO.. "everyone does it" for a good reason.. because it delineates things better and presents a more refined look. Have to remember that the factories all paid thier designers pretty good money to come up with these things to begin with and you can literally accentuate.. or deaccentuate certain proportions(height/length/width) and/or existing bodylines by using certain techniques.

The same thing could be said for home brewed Lemans stripes too. IMO, too much stripe.. not enough stripe.. improperly scaled spacing between them.. and lack of edge delineation all leads to that "homemade and unfinished look" sometimes. Now granted.. this definately looks far better done than some high school kid painting racing stripes on his first car.. but I simply like edge delineation because it's been proven to work at varying distances to bring stripes out more. Makes it pop more and not many will fault it when done towards proper scale. I would however agree that wider than typical striping with lack of delineation can add to the "stealth look" when cruising down the road at distance. It just loses some of its intended effect when viewed while standing still, is all.

Anywho.. it wasn't an attack on his character.. just an observation based on studying the most popular and award winning factory and custom designs over the years. Not many of those designs can get away without some type of multiple stripes(perimeter, vertical, or hoizontal), fades, or at least one edge being delineated in some fashion.

I also know quite a bit about "rebellion" myself and practice it almost like a religion much of the time.. but that doesn't mean that I'm so quick to stray from a popular or winning combination.. however "cookie cutter" it may be.. or blow hot air up anyone's whazoo just because I happen to like the other 99% of thier car either. There's nothing wrong with hanging on prominant/proven coattails and there's usually always something that can be improved upon when it's really critiqued hard enough. But again.. to each his own and it certainly doesn't look anywhere near "bad". Nuff said.

The stripe was supposed to be FLATTER than it is. My painter buffed it and it turned glossy. (Imagine that :rant2:) with the Flat black I had intended on doing a Gloss ouline pinstripe to define it. I like it this way. I do think the hood at all blue had more presence than the black does. The black kind of makes it disappear. People are raving about the car at the show today so I dont think its bothering anyone but me.

Here is what the stripe is supposed to look like:

Thanks Dave. I improved a lot over the weekend as I got better at driving in 2nd gear vs 1st gear from previous events. Looking at the results and removing the "Racecar" 70 Camaro from them, I got 9th out of 70 drivers. If you dig in a little further and pick out the sponsored drivers on 315 or wider 200 tw tires, and 600hp, I look even better. I dont stand a chance at competing with those guys.

There is still more left in it as is. A perfect run might net me a high 59. I need more power and/or less weight, stickier tires, 6pt harness, front sway bar, and lots of tweaking to get into the 58's. Luckily, all but the tires is fairly cheap to come by to and extent. Competition will be tighter in the fall as BFG has a new tire that will make a lot more guys competitive. Myself included if I can get my hands on a set.

That "racecar" 70 Camaro (the winner) was running on 315, 200 tw tires all the way around, weighed in about 26-2700 lbs and had better than 700 hp. It is a puropse built monster. Couldnt sit and idle more than a couple minutes without either draining the batterly or overheating. That car came in 1,2, and 11th places with 3 different drivers. If I were the guy in 3rd place, I think I'd take the ruel book over to the officials and start asking questions.

Here is a video someone took for me.

Nice thread ;) My car is just the 1970 Grabber hood but solid instead of 2 stripes. The car was an original grabber and when re-painted, the hood was too faded to see the middle part (cowl was always all black on those cars). So they painted it solid.

The old Mav was painted back in 1982 or so, still hanging in there. I've often thought about when I get it redone if I'll stay that way or go with the 'original' 1970 look.
