    I'd look at it from a bean counters perspective. Imagine being an exec at FoMoCo, and you're launching a brand new car. you probably don't want to spend millions of dollars on tooling, and advertising if there's a chance it might be a resounding failure. That's why they launched the Maverick before letting Mercury in on the game. "Just in case".

    i have the Wiper blades still... From what I've seen, All of the original pinstriping, or when i bought mine, it had 13,000 miles on it, the original oil filter....took that off by the way haha

    Hi-I almost never post here but just happened upon this today-The Seat Belt Light was on cars produced on or after 1/1/72. This was a federal safety standard, along with the following items: buzzer, standardized previously optional front retractors, and newly introduced rear outboard belt retractors.
    Federal standards usually go into effect on 1/1 of the calendar year, not the model year.

    It should have. Sounds like somebody removed them.
    Here are 2 separate brochure pages which refer to the reminder system being standard. The buzzers and lights were frequently disconnected. However, this system needs the retractors to work, since the cutoff switches are located in the retractors themeselves.

    Mine does not have inertia reels. Where would they even be attatched. Were they part of the seat?

    Actually I made a mistake referring to them as inertia reels. The 1972-73 retractors are actually a ratchet type. Pull it out, feed it back and it locks.
    If you want to pull it out again, you have to retract it again. They are mounted on the outboard floor on either side. They are not part of the seat.
    It would be quite easy for someone to swap them out for the old type, though. There were 1972-up Mavs that got the old style belts, but they were all build and sold in Brazil, Mexico or Venezuela!
