so i have been helping my buddy with his 83 f150. it origionaly had one of those veriable venture carbs. we converted it to a standard ford 2 brl and a duraspark system. but i don't think that has anything to do with the problem it seems to be having. once it is started it runs fine. when it is cold it starts fine but when it has warmed up if you turn it off it acts like the batterie is low and wont crank. but once it has cool back down it starts back up fine. i have no idea what is going on. we had the alt and the starter checked. they are fine. we also put a new voltage regulator on it and it keeps doing it. i would just love some direction to hopefully figure this problem out.
i would think ignition coil but you can push start the truck with no problem. it will start right up. but i'll check the grounds my buddy said that he did change one of the battery cables.
Yea, I doubt the coil when you said turned over slow like a dead battery an wont crank. Get a load test on battery also. good luck
A quick test is pump the gas like 5 times before you start it up when it's hot. If it cranks over at normal speed after that then it's ignition timing, If not then its the starter. What this does is flood the engine, by doing this it will avoid the engine from binding and allow it to crank over. but if it still binds up then it's the windings in the starter. Do not do this all of the time. once you find the problem fix the problem.
no headers but i will try the timing thing. there is no timing marks on the crank pully because it was origionaly a duraspark 3 set up so i kinda timed it by ear. i have done it that way before on my own cars but never had this type of problem before. but it does kinda sound like that might be the problem. i'll let you guys know what i find.
How close to the exhaust pipe is the starter? The starter might have aluminum windings in the field coils and they don't work well when hot. If you get another starter with copper winding the problem might go away. You might want to get the exhaust as far away from the starter as you can.
no updates yet. i haven't had a chance to go over to his house and work on his truck with him. i'm busy and he was working weekends so trying to find time is really hard. but as soon as i know what is going on i'll let you guys know.
so i think we figured it out. the brand new batterie was dead. it wouldn't hold a charge. we changed it and it stopped having the problem. i did retard the timing a little bit. seems to be running great now.
