Ok I had this cars engine rebuilt because it quit running one day and would not start, the mechanic I took it to said it had low compression and needed to be rebuilt..so this is what I did, he rebuilt the engine and I went to pick it up about 58 miles from my house (long story) anyhow car ran great bringing it home I was actually speeding and didn't even know it....but to the problem, after getting it home it sat in my yard for a week and I went out and started it up every other day, and it ran fine, Put it on craigslist and had a buyer right away....young girl came out and we went for a test drive, car ran fine until we headed back to my house...when we slowed down to turn around the engine died...started it back up it ran fine, slowed to turn corner it died, started back up ran fine, last turn on my road slowed and it died, wound up pushing it home and it has not ran since...It has fire..it is getting fuel and I will do a compression check as soon as I find my gauge..I have replaced the crank position sensor and the throttle position sensor..about to give up if compression is ok.

Take it right back to the mechanic. I'm a mechanic by trade and I know....stuff happens. If he's an honest wrench, he'll tell you if it was his mistake or just a coincidence. (remember, just because it has fuel pressure doesn't mean it's enough)

if it jumped timing, it would lose compression.

Like steve said, and if there anything like the 2.5 KL motor its a common occurence. Chances are motor was rebuilt but not a new timing belt tensioner. I'm not all that fimiliar with that motor, but I am very familiar with the 2.5 kl that is found in the newer mazda mx6, 626, and ford probes.

Probetalk.com by far the best information site for them motors, a guy over there screen name matthicks can for sure help you out if he is still on the board.

i didn't really work on many 626's that old, but most mazda motors fairly the same, if they reused the old spring tensioner it could have jump timing, which is not a big deal (non interference motor)
