What do you guys think of the IDI 7.3 L diesel in a 1991 F250?

Strengths/weaknesses? Anything to watch out for? Reliability? (I hear there are issues with the injection pump at times) They are totally different than the later Power Stroke engines which I have some experience with, so I'm looking for your opinions. How does tow capability compare to the later Power Stroke engines?

Also, any reviews of the 1991 F250? My girlfriend's parents have a 1991 F250 XLT Lariat, 7.3L IDI Diesel, 5 speed, 4x4, Extended cab, long bed that is sitting on their ranch.

I really like the 1993-1997 body style, but the 91 has potential. Does anybody have any nice pics of the 91 style for inspiration?

    Thanks!

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
I had an 89 F250 Lariat(im pretty sure they look just like the 91) and i loved it! Never really had any big problems with it. Although i had the 460, but i always wished that it had the diesel..... cause the 460 got about 10MPG on a good day.

I liked the body a lot, the only thing i didn't like were the mirrors.

Here's my '90 F150 with the front half of the 2.5" lift installed. It is the same body style as that '91 F250, and I personally like this body style more than the '92-'96, but that's just me.

I work around the 7.3 and I love the engine easy to work on and easy to figure out . We have one with 219000 miles on it and have only had to replace the glow plugs and glow plug relay .

We have a 1992 F-250 4x4 7.3 at the shop with about 200,000 mi on it.Same as Doug said, glow plus and timer was done on it but thats all, runs great. It is a little under powered compared to a turbo diesel but simple to work on.Also the front clips from the 92-96 body style will bolt right on if you prefer those.

I looked into buying an older Ford diesel awhile back & according to one of our diesel mechs at work, the older non- powerstroke 7.3 and 6.9 blocks have a tendency to crack around the starter area. I've never heard of that, and a good friend of mine has a '94 non powerstroke F350 dually that he's had zero problems with. But you might want to check that out anyway. Towing will not begin to compare with a powerstroke, or even a good 460 for that matter. I'd say they pull about like a 351W, only alot better on fuel mileage than the gas jobs. I like the 92-97 body better myself, but the 87-91 interior is better IMO. As was stated on here, the 92-97 front clip should bolt right up.
