    Hey all,

My '77 Mav has a 200 6 in it. What is required for a swap to a 302?

I didn't think the bellhousing on the c4 for the 200 would match up to the 302? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

John is correct, you need a bellhousing too.

I thought it was bad to put a 170-200 c4 up against the 302? weren't they weaker than the 250-302 c4s?

you are quite right. I used my 250ci C-4 behind stock 302 when did this swap and found out that the trans slipped badly , especially on downshifts with the throttle down. The trans did not live for to long. The only cure was to use a V8 trans.

I put my 250 c4 behind my 289 in the 77 almost 5 years ago. I drive the piss out of it ever chance I get and even had it at the drags. I havent had a problem with it yet. I did put a shift kit in it and type F fluid. Other than that its still stock with about 80K miles on it.

    C4 Debate

I agree with Mavaholic on the use of a 6cyl trans. In many trips to junkyards have found every style and type C4 behind every Ford engine in older vehicles. The best thing is to look up the ID tag code on each trans and see what it really is. No tag, then inside the case you must go. It does'nt make much sense to me to change out and engine and then put a used tranny in with it without going through it first. Nine times out of ten it will fail and you will end up pulling it out and do a rebuild. Not the trans fault, it is the installers fault for cutting corners. The 200 C4 is not a good choice to use because of the clutch numbers, but can be upgraded easily, find a trans with PEE code tag(Granada 250 and V8 cars for example) these have 5 disc clutch drums. With the age of these cars and trans replacements taken place, it is a look and see situation to get the right ones. Even the 4 clutch ones are going to withstand a lot of beating if built right and maintained. Do put on a trans cooler and use a shift kit and larger servo to eliminate a lot of problems.
