250 Engine Help???

    I have a 71 250 Maverick. I recently put in new points, condensor, distributor cap, plugs, and rebuilt carb. reason for doing this was a large stumble off the line. when we got all of this in not including rebuilding the carb when we set the timing back to 6 it would backfire out the carb when you pushed the accelerator quickly??? We kept playing with the timing until it is above 10 and now the car runs pretty good just a little stumble every now and then, but when I go to turn the car off for about 5 seconds it clanks and sputters and then shuts off. Someone told me that this was because the timing is off but it is where the car runs good??? I know I am jabbering but any help will be appreciated

    The reason that it sputters and clanks like that(called dieseling) is due to your timing being too retarted. Obviously your turning the timing back has fixed the symptoms, not the problems. Look over everything again.

    ...To work out these kinds of problems you need a timing lite, vacuum gauge and some understanding of the operation.
    ...Base time the engine without any vacuum on the dist. so it doesnot influence the advance.
    ...The dieseling is common to these engines and is the result of the carb throttle being open to far at shut down. Carbon deposits in the chamber contribute to problem. Some cars are equipped with an electrically operated solinoid and becomes the carb idle stop when the engine is running. When engine is turned off, this device allows the carb to fully close and shut off all air to help prevent dieseling.
    ....With a timing lite attached, jazz the engine and look for a retarding of the timing. If severe, that will contribute to a stumble.
