Yes they will bolt up, but it depends on the year of heads to give you a compression ratio that you can live with. The 302 started in 1968 until the 1990's, so there are alot of chamber differances over the years.Let me know what year you heads are and then we can figure out what the chamber volume would be. the heads are from my 75 mav. the block is old and i punched to hard one day and snapped the conecting rod, wrist pin and just shatterd the piston. oh yeah the cam snapped in two as well. the damage goes on but needless to say i need another short block i found a 289 out of an old 66 mustang. the guy selling is asking 275 or best offer so before i run out and buy it i figured i'd ask one of the many experts that frequent this board. also will the 289 bolt up to the tranny (c4 auto)?

    thanks for the help

Well, a 66 289 2brl has 9.3:1 compression with 200hp with 53.5cc chambers. Most of the 302 heads have 63.2cc chambers which would lower your compession some and you would lose some hp.. Why not stick with the 289 heads? If you use the 289 heads a wise investment would be to have hardened valve seats installed. And yes the 289 is a bolt in swap only change would be the waterpump(have to use the one for the Maverick). The Mustang water pump's rad hose is on the wrong side. Russ

Older 289s, 1965 and older I believe, have a 5 bolt tranny mount vs. the six bolt of later years.

Make sure this 298 has a six bolt tranny mount.
