1 at tdc firing order is correct have spark and gas still wont run does fire but wont take off runnin IAN
Sounds like the timing is 180 out, but you said it was correct. Could be a bad carb, or a severe vacuum leak. Check the power brake booster hose, and all the vacuum connections. If I can come up with anything else, I will let you know. Earl
289 won't run Just my opinion on this, if it was a used engine and been sitting awhile, you may have a stuck valve or two. Remove the valve covers and see if all rockers are moving and pushrods are in place. Sounds like a lack of compression for some reason(valves, rings etc.) You can also remove the fuel pump and check to see if the timing chain is very loose or not, should show this on the timing light. Remove the spark plugs and squirt some oil in the cylinders then replace them, if it fires up and dies you probably are looking at a overhaul. If you can get a compression gage use it first thing and that will give you an idea of engine condition right off the bat. Could be other things but your description of firing and quitting sure sound like no compression to me. Good luck anyway.
I am trying to remember, but isn't something in the primary electrical circuit bypassed when cranking? I have heard of this problem before, but I can seem to settle the gray matter on the exact thing. - David
something in the primary electrical circuit bypassed when cranking? The one small terminal on the starter solenoid provides full battery voltage to the coil during cranking by bypassing the ballast wire or resistor. When you release the key back to the RUN position primary ignition current is supplied to the coil through the resistor wire. If that circuit is open the car won't run. Don't know if that's your problem but it's a possibility. Good luck.
Well, I get to air my stupidity in public again to help a fellow Maverick owner! Make darned sure the distributor is not set 180 degrees opposite of where it needs to be! (name withheld to protect the obviously idiotic)
