Ok....I have a newly rebuilt C4 Sitting on the floor next to my Eliminator. The tranny in the cougar has a leaky front pump and is basically wore out. I am thinking of putting the C4 in it but I am not sure how it will hold up to the Cleveland. The car currently does a 8.4 in the 1/8 mile and is pretty stock. No headers, stock air cleaner, rv cam, 750 holley and 3.50:1 gears (open). My question is...what would I have to change to make it fit in and work? I think the drive shaft will not work, new tranny lines, not sure about the flex plate...

Anyway, the c4 will free up about 30-50 hp and if it will hold up for a while then I would like to make the conversion. I love the strength of the c6 but dont like the power loss (not to mention it needs a rebuild). Is it worth it???

    Opinions please...

cool car! Yes, you will wonder why you never went to a C4 to begin with! Should be (from what I've seen/heard) about .4-.6 faster at the track, plus get better gas mileage than the big C6.

So you think the c4 will stand up to the power of the cleveland?? I hope so cuz I think I am going to try it. The c4 is stock, will a shift kit help it live longer?

Is that export brace a Mustang unit or is it Cougar specific?

    Thanks

It is a Mustang/Cougar part....sharp eyes! :) I race the car (drag and scca) and wanted it a little stiffer in the front end. It is not stock for this car. I am still working on this one, I have had it for about 15 years now...only paid $800 for it but have a little more invested in it now. I havent driven it in over a year now...bad tranny. Hopefully soon..........

WoW, very nice. A good friend of mine has one exactly like it only running a 429 and tunnel ram dbl. fours. Has also not raced for awhile because of trans trouble. To answer your question on the C4, if it is built to specs and you use a full manual valve body should be fine. The shift kits are ok but must be a good one and not just a shift improver. Also there are some mods inside I do but if you are going to use it for street/strip should not have to worry about that. I would suggest using an "R" servo if you can find one or next best is the "H". Will eliminate a lot of slippage etc. in shift patterns. Use good trans "F" fluid and an external cooler of fairly large size. Am not sure on the flexplate situation as far as matching up a converter on the "C" engine. Brain is going south so I will have to refresh on that one. Is the C4 a 24 or 26 spline input? This is another whole subject itself. Later ;)

    Great...

Great, now I have another project to start!! Looks like I am going to put a c4 in the cougar. Never thought I would see that day. I have had a couple of FMX trannys in previous mustangs with the clevelands and they all crapped out within a couple of months. I know the FMX is not the best trans around, after they died I thought I wanted something stronger and went straight for the c6. This transmission has held up thru 2 cars and 18 years...it has held up well. The front pump finally gave up the ghost...

I am thinking I can use everything out of the 302 maverick (flex, torque and tranny). I think..but not sure...that they will all fit. The toploader that was for the cougar is now going in the Mav...sounds like a good trade off. I am trying to keep the cougar as original as possible. I am building the Maverick for pure fun!!

Seriously J, I would look at an AOD. Than you could put some deeper gears in and cruise comfortably. The FMX in my 69 Mustang is getting weak and everytime I think about converting to a C-4, I think that is money I could've spent on overdrive.

Here is a picture of my old Eliminator....

I have the toploader and dont think I will be able to afford another transmission any time soon. I would love to have a OD but that will just have to wait. Anyone know what rpm I would run with a toploader and 3.00 gears at 80mph??

My friend has a 69 Boss 302 eliminator for sale. I am not sure what he wanted but it was around $6-8000. Same paint as yours. Gotta love em.

That's damn cheap for a boss eliminator. What shape is it in?
