I bought a set of Tubular Automotive headers for a 351w for my 70 Maverick with 1 5/8 primaries. These are they same headers that Auto Krafters sell. They also say that you need a 3 piece motor mount set off of a 65 66 Mustang. They said these are required because it moves the engine back and up. It has to do this so the pitman arm on the steering gearbox doesn’t hit the tube when a left turn is made. So I spent a whole day trying these out and no matter what I do the pitman arm still hits #6 header tube. Also the frame mount does not even come close to bolting up to the frame on a Maverick. I told both Auto Krafters and Tubular Automotive about this and neither of them knew what to do or say. So I wanted to know if anybody out there has bought these headers and if they worked for them. If they do work, maybe mine are made wrong. Also if anyone could please tell me if they got a set of headers to work without modifying the header tubes. I also notch out my shock towers to make maintenance easier.
you useing power steering you may need the drop bracket i used a set of hedman Elite hedders for a 302 had to have one tube remade on the drivers side was hiting the pitmen arm like yours mine is with none power and a tube on the pas side remade to come closer to the motor but they fit with out jacking the motor up 2 inchs and all that cant remember how much they wanted but i have about 450 in mine and would prob clear with out the towers cut
My car doesnt have power steering. There was a thread about CometGT1974 using Hooker Super Comps but what I understood about the replys is that it was a 302. It looks like they would work with mine since my towers are notch. I will try to get a pic posted that shows how well my headers DONT fit. That kind of makes me upset that Tubular wont stand behind their product that is supposed to work in my car. They didnt even offer me to send the headers back to see if they were made wrong.
The headers that CometGT has are for the 351. He and a few other guys had to buy a spacer to go between the head and the header on the 302. Those super comps will hit the block on a 302 (shorter "Y"), they will clear a 351 cause of the wider "Y" which gets the heads and headers further away from the block. Also the SuperComps that CometGT has are 1 3/4 primaries.
Well I called Tubular Automotive on Monday and they said there is another guy with the same problem that I am having and he lives in Massachusetts. So in the beggining of September he is taking his car to Tubular and they are going to remake the left side header. Also I suggested to them to make a frame mount while retaining the original 302 engine mounts. So all I have to do now is send back the left header and wait another month and a half to continue on my car.
Glad to hear things are going to work out! This gives you time to scrape together more cash for the mav! -Todd
