so i have this 1970 hearse im working on. i was talking to a buddy about increasing feul mileage. came up with twin turbos. by putting the turbos on i should get better mileage correct?
if you want more mileage..... EFI it, then put a lean tune on it. Twin turbos are kinda pointless at that power level, a single Kenwood turbo would be perfect. Just find a 8V-92 Detroit Allison and steal the turbo!
I've dealt with 472/500's. Incredible engines really, but with such massive displacement in a super heavy car, any fuel mileage increase you get will be minimal around town. I suppose throwing on a turbo and changing to some rediculously low rear end ratio would (theoretically) help on pure highway economy. And even so, how long will it take to recoup the cost (turbo+exhaust+fabrication) in fuel savings...???
A turbo is NOT going to save fuel. When you add more air (forced induction), you need to add more fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio in the correct tune. Add the fact that, with a turb, you WILL have your foot in it all the time because that kind of power is so much fun...fuel miliage be damned!! The best way to increase feul miliage, is to add a Gear Vendors overdrive unit to the transmission...it will overdrive the top gear in the trans and lower the RPM's of the engine...thus using less fuel to motor down the highway.
Yeah - agreed, turbo wont save you any gas money. Gear Vendors unit is awesome, but expensive. There's another similar unit...Detroit something???...that is the same concept but uses mechanical linkage (instead of electric controls) to change the gears. About $1500 as opposed to $2500. Either way, you'll probably have some driveshaft work to do. You could also get a custom width quick-change rear end...???
Check out Maximum Torque Specialties (MTS) Experts in Caddy 425/472/500 performance....they might know some economy tricks too. http://www.500cid.com/Home.htm http://www.mtscadparts.net/servlet/StoreFront A friend of mine that dropped a built 500 Caddy in his 79 Malibu loved the set up they helped him build....that car can literally boil the tires for blocks However, fuel milage and mega-inch big blocks are two things that don't exactly go hand-in-hand
true but heavy hearse doesnt help either. before i worry about fuel economy i gotta figure out why i wont even crank. had a new starter when we parked it. only ten years ago. new optima battery and neutral safety switch has been bypassed. i need to get biggun backed out of her ruts but at this point in time only thing i have that will pull it is the mav thats in the shop. oh the luck. maybe i can catch my neighbor when he's got his tracktor out.
I mean no disrespect Johnson but what do they smoke over in Fargo, OK? I think your best bet for fuel economy on something like a hearse is weight reduction. I assume you have removed all the table/roller/etc. equipment from the rear? That stuff is very heavy, and I should hope that car's meat wagon days are over.
all the tables and motors removed for weight reduction by big bro. granted im not looking for significant gain i was looking at maybe 3-4 miles to the gallon. only slab of meat that thing is gonna haul around is me to car shows or cruise ins.
a turbo can get you beter mpg. it all depends on how well you size it to your needs and how well you can keep your foot out of it. the turbo uses engergy that is in the exhast to move air into the motor. this air being pushed into the motor allows it to not work so hard to pull air into the motor. this can result in beter mpg. but. when you put a turbo on you will be flooring it because you will love the feel of that thing spooling up to full boost. that will result in a loss of mpg.
