alot of times you hear people refer to the maveriick big bumpers as the "5 mph bumpers" since they were supposed to withstand an impact of 5mph all thngs considered mavericks were a pretty low end cost effective car in their day. i found this vid on youtube. its 2 olds comercials but also a crash test at the end of their 5mph bumper system. i thought it was a pretty cool compairson as to what you would have found on on a more high end vehicle around the same time period fast fwd to 1:50 to skip the comercials i used to drive a '76 delta 88 4dr 455, that would have been a helluva car to take a hit from back in the day or even in something with modern saftey features
Pimp mobile! Where's Huggy Bear? My Grandma had a 69 Delta 88 with the 455. It was a tank, but that big block would haul the mail !
my 76 was 17 feet bumper to bumper and wide anough where i could lay across the front and back seats the funny thing is i would pull up to little ricers and beat them, bad...
What a blast from the past! That's the car I learned to drive on. My folks had a '72 Delta 88 Royal with the Rocket engine. That car could just plain FLY!! That was one fun car to drive out on the long, straight roads in Texas. You could peg the needle not even know it. Maybe that car is the reason I have something of a leadfoot.
I thought 5mph bumpers were made to scrap the competition (imports) and kill pedestrians! I've been living a lie all this time. I guess that system works excellent if the car's bumper you're hitting is flat, just like that concrete wall. BTW, I had never seen a crash test using real people, did you notice that??? That's awesome.
My 73 Fury 1 was a serious beast. My 75 Caddy Sedan De Ville was 21 feet long and rode like a dream. I think it was nearly 7 feet wide.
