We have been talking about this car on the Cougar forum that I belong to.

We are guessing that it will sell for anywhere between $11,000-21,000.
I am guessing the low side of that range. Minor detail flaws and the lack of airconditioning will hold it back. I personally think that the Augusta Green paint and saddle tan interior and a lack of vinyl top make it a winner. Just add some factory Cougar styled steel wheels and tires and call it a day.

Was there any discussion about the 4 speed in a base 302 car? That has to be rare - plus that it is an XR7.

All in all a fun car to watch. Who ever buys it will be making a good investment. IMHO

    This is 1 of 530 1968 XR7's with a 302-2V engine and toploader 4 speed.

Odds are that this car was customer ordered rather than dealer stock. A Kevin Marti report would tell. It is unusual to have a 4 speed on a base 302-2V, coupled with the lack of both airconditioning and a vinyl top.

4 speeds are quite rare in any Cougar. For 1968, 4 speeds accounted for about 3% of the total production.

My current restomod project is a 1968 XR7 that was a 3 speed stick car.
Nearly have a cable clutch T-5 conversion finished.

Little bit of Cougar trivia. No Mercury Cougar came with a 6 cylinder engine until after 1979. All V-8's  They aren't called an upscale Mustang for nothing. Most XR-7's came with disc brakes, power steering, and a console.

Which one was that? do you have VIN? Was it sold on eBay?

That car is almost perfect, the only thing wrong is it has tan interior instead of black. I just do not like tan interior, in any car...

Any idea how many '70 XR7 Cougars came factory with a 428CJ, floor shift automatic, A/C, disc brakes, sun roof, power windows, tilt wheel, and vinyl top? My grandpa has this car sitting around, white with black vinyl top and red interior. He gave $500 for it in Indianapolis in 1978. It is supposedly 1 of 3 or something... I only have a pic of the interior. Outside is dirty and has rust through in the rear quarters.

Friend of ours had a '70 Eliminator. I LOVED the body styling. I'm partial to the '70 as opposed to the '68, but I wouldn't turn either any of them down if I had the chance to buy one for the right price. Neat cars, and something you don't see everyday.

Jamie, does your grandfather have a Kevin Marti report on this car? It is very likely to be one of 3 with Q code engine (428CJ), C6 transmission and ASC installed (factory) sunroof. That is a very rare combination. Appears to be a very loaded car. Any idea if it has the ram air option? For some reason in 1970 Cougars were not designated with an R code engine like the previous year. All Q code, and ram air was optional, they run about 60% with ram air.

This car also has either factory AM/FM or AM/8track stereo. Looks like the 8 track. I can't tell, but if that is the switch in the console it is likely an aftermarket sunroof. :-(

If possible, I urge your grandfather to register the car with the Cougar Club of America in the Cobra Jet registry. My good friend Scott Taylor is the registrar.

$500, what a deal. For that price in 2007 you couldn't even buy the air cleaner and snorkel.

How complete is the car? engine and transmission with smog still under the hood? Do you remember if it has a hood scoop? Hood scoops came on ram air cars that weren't Eliminators.
Worth a bunch of money the way it sits. A concours restoration would put it way over $40k.

    1969 XR7 428 Super Cobra Jet 4 speed :burnout:
    1968 XR7-G 302-4V sunroof - major project car
    1968 XR7 302-4V converting to 5 speed. :drive:

Ok since we are on the topic of Cougars. My dad has a 1967 390 3 speed manual,9'',3.91's,trac loc,man steering, man brake,am radio, inverness green, black vinyl top, parchment int.The car has 6.5 litre tags on the fenders, and is all original including paint, with 65,000 miles on it.Is this car rare? I always thought it was being a big block with no real options.Mabee you can shed a little light on this for me,any info you have would be really appreciated. Thanks Derek.
