Ok, I just took delivery of a 73 4dr maverick with a 302. I'm pretty sure most if not all of the parts i need to swap it into my 2dr are there, I just want to make sure I won't have any problems.

Is there anything I should know about swapping 4dr drive and power train parts into my 2 door or is it pretty straight forward?

Also, I know in 73 the compression dropped. Did they put different heads (larger combustion chambers) on the 302's or did they just put dished pistons in? Needless to say, this thing is gonna be right before she goes in my 70.

Everything will go right in except for the drive shaft. If your 70 has an 8" already, you can use it. If it has the 7.5 then I dont have a clue. The 4 dr driveshaft will be too long.

use the d shaft outta the 6 car...ive never had a problem with em..there is a POSSIBILITY that the 6 was different with those 2 years but highly doubt it..use the 8 inch outta the v-8 car as I believe the 70 6 cars had the weenie rear...IF the 6 car has an inspection plate on the rear..get it outta there:cool:

Beleive it or not, the 70 has a 250 and an 8" rear end in it. I'm not sure what gear ratio it has, but when you get up to about 60 on the interstate, the engine is reving so high it sounds like its gonna lift itself out of the engine bay.

However, I'm gonna use the rear out of the 4-dr anyway....5 lug suspension :D :D Just wish it had disk brakes on the front.

IF you have a lower gear in the 6 8inch..leave it in there and just change the axles..4 bolts on each side and slide em out..they're 28 spline..the v-8 cars have 3.00 gears dunno if the 6 has lower or not...mark one wheel and count the d-shaft rev's to one turn of the back wheel ...that'll give ya an idea of gear ratio:bananaman ...I LOVE THIS BANANNA MAN

I know we have covered this before, but the axles can't be pulled out and swapped from one axle housing to the other. 4-lug housings use a different bearing than the 5-lug housings.

Craig...even the 8 inch 4 lug housings?? Ive never had a 6 cyl mav..I just cant figure out why ford would make 2 different 8 inch housing sizes..I am NOT saying you are wrong , I am just inquiring...I know the rears with the inspection cover have c clips...and the 57 9 inch rear used the same bearings the 8 inch v-8 mav and the 6 cylinder 8 inch grenade ( pun intended) axles have... teach me dude !!:bananaman

Surely somebody will chime in here with the correct answer, but I believe the 4-lug housing is narrower diameter at the backing plates...making use of a different bearing. All I know is that they are different and won't interchange by just pulling and swapping the axles.
