anyone know if the engine compartment for the 77 mustang with a 4-cylinder can fit an I6 or V8 conversion? If so, would the tranny need to be upgraded as well. New at this mustang thing and see one I want to buy for my lil brother. He don't need no 4-cylinder jiloppy tho. Thanks (y)

yes, a v8 will fit. 302 cars used special oil pan, pickup, mounts, bellhousing and torque converter for auto.

what trans is it now auto or manual? theres plenty of 2.3 hop up parts or could always do a turbo swap JMO:D

it's a craigslist ad, so don't know what tranny is in it now - trans is a minor issue IMO as long as it has room to do the engine upgrade. He'll be rebuilding this from the ground up. (he started an 86 maxima and I told him to stop haha). As it stands now the engine doesn't run anyway. Couldn't tell from the pictures or a google search if the engine compartment would be big enough for an upgrade tho (looks smaller than the maverick's). Probably have to get a new tranny anyway, but if a different type is needed for a larger engine swap that won't fit in this car then it becomes an equal issue as not having room for an engine. (hmmm.... size does matter? :rofl2:)
Thanks for the input. From what you said it sounds like it would work. :thumbs2:

Yes a 302 will fit. You will need the motor mounts and stands, headers or manifolds, oil pan and pickup and bellhousing and torque converter. These parts will have to be off of a v-8 Mustang II as they were Mustang II only.

The 4 cylinder trans might be a C4 (could be a C3) but in either case you will want to get a C4 from either a 250 six or larger engine (302, 351). The C3 is completely worthless behind a V8 and the 250 and larger engines all use the same number of clutches.
Now if you have a manual transmission the same thing applies - get a transmission for the large six or a V8.

to elaborate on that more the bell housing is smaller and the fly wheel is a 143 toothed version......the engine mounts are the same....but the engine stands are specific to the Mustang II....I dont remember on the oil pan......I should though I have down 5.0l fuelie swaps in two of them but that was 8 or more years ago.....

Thanks for the info guys! The dude is not calling me back about the car, but after watching me work on the mav all summer my brother's pretty set on getting a mustang to rebuild/restore. If you wanna keep the info coming I always love the learning, but just to keep u posted - craigslist is sketch and this might not work out. Thanks again! Now I have alot better idea of the questions he needs to ask when looking at these cars too. (y)

Mustang II's are a nice, cheaper alternative to the pricey classics and often more pricey late models.

....and of course, they already come equipped with the much desired Mustang II front susupension!

I've got one of my own I'm working on...

I'm wondering how hard it's going to be to find the M-II only bellhousing, flywheel and converter.

UMmm. Not wanting to argue or anything but I have 3 of these (1 to fix and 2 for parts). The mounts and stands are V-8 Mustang II specific.

    http://www.pigseye.com/sadie/MustangII/index.htm

    Unique Mustang II parts

OEM Mustang II V8s used a special reduced-diameter C4 bellhousing, torque converter, 141-tooth flexplate, block plate, dust cover. Also special
motor mounts, oil pan, oil pump pickup, and accessory mounting brackets.
